Joan Marlene (Geving) Sherburne, age 86, passed away October 12, 2020, at Gundersen Health Systems in La Crosse, Wis.
She was born April 4, 1934, to George and Blonda (Skauge) Geving. She was a lifelong Spring Grove resident, graduating from Spring High School in 1952.
On March 27, 1954, Joan married Donald Sherburne. The couple started their life in Mabel, Minn. In 1957 they decided they wanted to live in Spring Grove. They and their neighbors decided to build their homes together and lifelong friendships were made.
They were later blessed with two sons and a daughter. They had very busy lives. They often would go camping and as the kids got older they were kept very busy enjoying all their activities and sports. She often said “these were the best years of their lives.”
They later enjoyed reliving these happy times with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joan was a wonderful grandma. She especially enjoyed decorating cookies for the holidays with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed collecting dolls, loved gardening and spending time outdoors.
Joan worked at the Spring Grove Clinic, and later at the Spring Grove Post Office, retiring in 2001.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and its ladies groups, and also card club.
Survivors include her children Michael (Carol) Sherburne and Kim (Doris) Sherburne of Spring Grove, Minn., and Terri (Sherburne) Oakes of New Prague, Minn.; seven grandchildren: Brent (Jessica) Sherburne, Kelly (Jake) Sherburne Waugh, Nathan (Britt) Sherburne, Gavin (Chelsey Vickerman) Sherburne, Tyler Oakes (Ingrid Scantlebury), T.J. Oakes and Tanner (Hannah) Oakes; seven great-grandchildren: Claire Sherburne, Jadyn Sherburne, Walter Sherburne, Hank Sherburne, Auggie Oakes, Malia Clark, Gavin Clark; and brothers Gerald (Carol) Geving and Larry Geving.
In addition to her parents George and Blonda Geving, and her husband Donald, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law Todd Oakes, her sister-in-law Lois Geving, and special friend Richard Burtness.
There will be a public drive-by visitation prior to services from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, October 16 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Spring Grove, Minn., under the church canopy.
Private family services will be held on Friday, October 16, 2020, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be given.Roble Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
