James Halla obituary, Fillmore County Journal

James Walter Halla, age 77, passed away May 21, 2025, at Olmsted Medical Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

James was born to parents Walter and Ethel (Fisher) Halla in Owatonna, Minn. He attended school in Owatonna, Minn., and attended college at Austin Community College for two years.  After college, he went into the Army for two years at Vietnam.

James was united in marriage to Julie Jerdet on July 7, 1973, at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church in rural Austin.  They lived in Ellendale, Minn., for 16 years and moved to Spring Valley, Minn.  James worked as a rural mail carrier until he retired.

He enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada with family, gardening and canning, cooking and baking, watching the Vikings and other sports, and being with family.

James was survived by his wife of 51 years, Julie; children Cherie Laack of Dexter, Minn., and Matthew Halla of Elysian, Minn.; grandchildren Samantha, Haley, Cole, Lilly and Maddie; great-grandchildren Charleigh, Maren, Graham and Quinn.  He is also survived by his father Walter Halla of Owatonna, Minn., brother Kevin Halla (Mary Lou Davidson) of Owatonna, Minn., sister Darlene (Gene) Katzung of Owatonna, Minn., sister-in-law Audrey Halla of Owatonna, Minn., and brother-in-law Steve Morse of St. Paul Park, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his mother Ethel, sister Geri, brother Duane, and sister-in-law Rose.

Service will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, Minn. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the Hindt Funeral Home.  Burial will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, Minnesota.
