Helen Marie Mercer, 81, of Chatfield, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 16, 2016 at the Chosen Valley Care Center.

Helen was born September 1, 1935 in Chatfield to George and Laura (Mohlke) Allen. She grew up in the Chatfield community, graduating from Chatfield High School in 1953.

On June 15, 1957 she married Walter “Wally” Mercer Jr. at the Sumner Center Church. Helen began her career as a telephone operator in Chatfield. She then worked for Mayo Clinic as a registrar for over 25 years. Later she worked at the Brass Band Lending Library.

Helen enjoyed attending brass band concerts and working in her yard. She enjoyed retirement spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Helen is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Deanna Capelle of Spring Valley; son, Keith (Shelly) of Danube, Minn.; grandchildren Kelsey, Brittney, and Marick; step-grandchildren Olivia, Victoria, and Miles. A brother, Wesley (Anna Mae) Allen of Chatfield; and a sister, Lois (Ed) Cramer of Denver, Colo., also survive.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Wally in 2011; parents, and brother Norman.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, September 21 at Chatfield Lutheran Church, with Pastor Mark Docken officiating. A time of visitation and sharing will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday evening at Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield and one hour prior to service on Wednesday at the church. A committal service will follow at the Orion Center Cemetery following the funeral service.
