Spring Grove servers enjoyed a torrent of aces during 3-0 road volleyball routs at Houston and Schaeffer Academy as the Lions completed a pair of SEC season sweeps. With the inability to consistently receive serve, neither opponent mounted much threat at the net. With a 19th straight win versus Houston and a 12th consecutive victory against Schaeffer, Spring Grove improved to 13-4 (8-1 SEC).
SG 3, Houston 0 (25-4, 25-15, 25-19) Each team committed 23 total errors, but the Lions displayed an ability to score, while Houston did not. The Hurricanes (4-13, 3-6 SEC) won blocking honors at the net and served a strong 98% with 3 aces with only a single misfire, but they managed only 12 kills with 15 hitting errors. In addition to 22 service aces, Spring Grove hit the floor with 30 kills. Five different Lions served multiple aces. Sydney Holland served a match-best 8 aces, and Joelle Halverson had a team-high 8 kills. Jordis Neeley led scoring with 5 kills and 7 aces.
Houston scored the first point of the match, but that would be its lone lead all evening. After a 25-4 blowout in the first set, the ‘Canes fought back more competitively but never led during the final two sets. Set three was tied at 15-15 before the Lions scored 10 of the final 14 points.
Spring Grove swept the B-team, C-team and both junior high matches, all by 2-0 scores.
SG 3, Schaeffer 0 (25-10, 25-8, 25-17) Winless Schaeffer Academy (0-13, 0-8 SEC) did have more kills (15) than hitting errors (7), but those Lions were also overwhelmed the visiting Lions’ 36 kills (11 errors) and 19 service aces (6 errors). Neeley again led scoring with a match-high 12 kills, a block assist and 2 aces. Emerson Ingvalson had 6 kills (no errors) with only 11 swings (55% efficiency). Halverson added 8 kills on 16 attempts (43%). All six Spring Grove servers scored with an ace, led by Holland serving 16 for 16 (100%) with 6 aces and Ingvalson who served 13 for 13 with 5 instant winners.
Schaeffer scored more points from 20 SG errors than it did on its own merit (18 points). Again, both teams had the same number of overall errors (20), but Spring Grove earned 58 points. Grove got off to strong starts with a 9-1 lead in set one, a 6-0 start in set two and scoring the first eight points in the final set.
The B-team swept both sets to remain undefeated at 9-0. Spring Glove also took the junior high match, 2-1.
