Houston/Kingsland Series Headlined by ‘Cane Girls Win
It will probably turn out to be the SEC’s biggest gal’s contest of the year. Defending West champion, West leading Kingsland (8-0, 10-1) took on defending East champion, East leading Houston (6-0, 7-0). The game was a match-up of Houston’s 1-3-1 half-court zone, used to get transition baskets, and Kingsland’s 2-3 zone, also used to get transition baskets. Neither team got baskets in transition (10 total transition points)! The teams’ star guards, Ellie Buchholtz and Emma Geiwitz, were the ones doing the scoring. Buchholtz put up 14 points and Geiwitz 13 in the first half. Kingsland led 23-20. Houston played most of the stanza without top interior player Sydney Torgerson (foul trouble). To start the second, the Knights went 15-5 to lead 38-25 lead. Foul trouble was an issue for both teams. Torgerson helped the ‘Canes get back in it. The sophomore scored all of her 14 points after intermission. With 4:08 left, Geiwitz hit a three and Kingsland’s lead was gone. The game sat tied at 45. Very late, Buchholtz hit one of two free throws (0:39) to put the Knights up 50-49. But Geiwitz was then fouled. The senior hit two, putting Houston up 51-50 (0:27). From there, Kingsland missed a tough go-ahead basket and a desperation half-court heave at the buzzer. Surviving the foul outs of Torgerson and Becca Rostad, overcoming a 13-point second half deficit, and getting pounded on the glass, the ‘Canes prevailed 52-50. Geiwitz (25 pts, 5-10 threes, 6-11 FTs, 5 rebs, 5 asts, 3 stls) led the way. She hit a season-high five triples. Torgerson (14 pts, 5-7 FGs, 4-5 FTs, 6 rebs) was super-efficient. Sophomore Olivia Beckman had two field goals. They were Houston’s last two makes, key long twos in the final three minutes. Buchholtz (season-high 27 pts, 8-17 FGs, 3-7 threes, 8-12 FTs, 7 rebs, 4 asts, 6 stls) led Kingsland. Shelby Beck (10 pts, 10 rebs) and Merredith Farlinger (8 pts, 14 rebs) helped. All other Knights combined for five points. Anika Reiland (2 pts, 9 rebs, 3 asts, 5 stls) helped. Kingsland won rebounds (48 to 28) and offensive rebounds (23 to 8), second-chance-points (17 to 5) and steals (17 to 11). Houston had more assists (17 to 10) and shot better (16 of 43 for 37.2% to 16 of 62 for 25.8%). The Knights were 5 of 26 from three (19.2%), Houston 6 of 16 (37.5%). Kingsland’s 10-game win streak was snapped. They won the last three series meetings. Houston Coach Dale Moga; “I personally never got the feeling that we were going to lose during the game even though we were down double digits in the second half… I just really trust this group of 16 girls and know that we always have a chance.” On the boy’s side of things, Kingsland ended a 7-game losing streak by beating Houston 68-33. Bret Musel (12 pts, 5-10 FGs, 5 rebs) led the victors. Noah Kingsley (10 pts, 9 rebs) led the defeated. Nick Eickhoff (8 pts, 8 rebs, 4 asts), Kaden Rath (8 pts, 8 rebs, 3 stls), William Jahn (8 pts), Jayden Brink (7 pts, 6 rebs), Garrison Hubka (7 pts, 8 rebs), and Mason Kolling (6 pts, 12 rebs, 3 asts) made it Knight team effort. Kenny Grupe (8 pts, 6 rebs) and Morgan Rohweder (8 pts) helped for Houston.

Lanesboro and LeRoy-Ostrander did their boy/girl series. The Burro boys posted a 63-40 road win. John Prestemon (14 pts, 7 rebs, 3 asts), Mason Howard (14 pts, 3-7 threes), and Ryan Holmen (9 pts, 4-6 FGs) led the way. Twelve Burros scored. Tanner Olson (12 pts, 5-9 FGs, 4 rebs), Levi Royston (8 pts, 5-6 FTs, 4 rebs, 3 stls), and Isaac Collier (7 pts, 7 rebs) did work for L-O. The Burros ended a three-game skid. Lanesboro’s girls won at home 58-45. They won three-pointers (six makes to zero) and free throws (20 makes to nine) big. Burros and Larks Split

Lanesboro and GM’s teams played with semi-surprising results. Lanesboro’s boys used a huge performance from John Prestemon to notch a big win. GM led 35-21 late in the first half, but then struggled to combat a diamond-and-one zone on Colt Landers. Matt Asleson’s Burros went 20-10 to start the second half, tying the game at 45. A 13-1 Burro run later (Prestemon scored nine points) put the home squad up 60-51. Lanesboro prevailed 63-58. Prestemon (career-high 26 pts, 6-10 FTs, 4 rebs, 5 asts, 5 stls) had 21 in the second half. Sawyer Johnson (13 pts, 4-11 threes, 6 rebs) and Ryan Holmen (11 pts, 4-7 FGs, 5 rebs) helped. J.T. Rein defended Landers. Evan Oehlke (14 pts, 6-9 FGs), Taylor Glynn (14 pts, 8 rebs, 4 asts), Landers (13 pts, 4-6 FGs, 8 rebs), and Mason Geier (10 pts, 3-7 threes) hit double digits for GM. Roman Warmka added 3 (pts), 7 (rebs), and 6 (asts). Half-by-half shooting told the tale (1st: GM 13 of 20 > 65%, Lanes 9 of 29 > 31%. 2nd: GM 9 of 29 > 31%, Lanes 14 of 25 > 56%). Lanesboro improve to 7-5, 7-6. GM fell to 4-4, 5-4. The girls game was a blow-out, GM winning 51-30. The Larks led 37-12 at halftime. River Landers (20 pts, 10-13 FGs, 6 rebs, 4 stls) led the way.
