In the West, Grand Meadow (17-1, 27-3) won the division over Kingsland (16-2, 21-7), Southland (4-14, 6-22), LeRoy-Ostrander (4-14, 7-21), and Lyle/Pacelli (3-15, 4-23). Resultantly, Grand Meadow and Lanesboro have the most All-SEC picks.
Section 1A runner-up Grand Meadow gets a league high three 1st team All-SEC picks and a 2nd team pick. Making first team All-SEC are Larks Lexy Foster (5’11” Jr. F), Lauren Queensland (5’10” So. F/G), and Kendyl Queensland (5’10” Sr. G/F). Sydney Cotten (5’6” Sr. G) makes 2nd team. Foster had a breakout year, averaging a team best 14.4 PPG and a team-best 7.6 RPG. She upped her scoring average over 5 PPG from her sophomore year (8.9 PPG) while shooting at a 45% clip. A big who could stretch the floor, she made 43 of 123 threes (35%). Foster scored in double figures 23 times and was averaging 18.5 PPG a game over GM’s last eight games heading to the 1A title contest (where she was limited by injury). L-Queensland was the team’s second leading scorer and rebounder at 13.5 PPG and 6.5 RPG. She hit 43 of 121 threes (36%). Older sister K-Queensland was maybe the SEC’s top defender, and the senior also averaged 7.4 PPG, 2.8 RPG, and 3.2 APG. Both Queenslands repeated as All-SEC 1st Team while Foster earned her first nod of any kind. Kendyl has three times been first or second team. Cotten averaged 8.4 PPG, 4.2 RPG, and a team-best 3.6 APG and 2.0 SPG. She also hit a team-best 47 of 141 threes (33%). Cotten made All-SEC HM the past two seasons. Making All-SEC HM this season for the Larks is Rebecca Hoffman (5’10” Sr. F > 4.1 PPG, 4.9 RPG, team-best 52% FGs). Said girls led GM (27-3) to their second straight 1A runner-up finish as well as the SEC-West title. Lanesboro won the SEC-East and gets three All-SEC picks. Kaci Ruen (6’0” Sr. C) and Jensyn Storhoff (5’7” Fr.) make 1st team while Jessie Schrieber (5’11” Sr. F) makes 2nd team. Ruen again was probably the SEC’s most unstoppable player and she averaged a double-double (16.8 PPG, roughly 14 RPG). Ruen shared the SEC Player of the Year award with Houston’s Sydney Torgerson. Ruen had at least 18 double-doubles (five games were missing full stats) while shooting over 50% from the field. The three-year starter finished with 1,236 career points. Storhoff, just a frosh, had another impressive year, as she averaged a team second-best 14.9 PPG with roughly 4 boards, 3.5 assists, and 3.5 steals per game. She led the Burros in threes made. Storhoff is one of two freshman 1st team All-SEC picks. Schreiber came close to averaging a double-double; 12.4 PPG and roughly 9.1 RPG. She also was an adept passer with around 3.0 APG. Schreiber finished her four-year career with 1,054 career points. Lanesboro had just one girls 1,000-point scorer the previous 10-years-plus (Olivia Haug) before two in the same class. Skyler Check (5’5” Sr. G > 6.8 PPG, roughly 3.0 RPG) made All-SEC Honorable Mention. Said girls led the Burros to back-to-back SEC-East titles and back-to-back 1A semifinal appearances. Lanesboro had not had a span of winning basketball in the “Journal Sports” era (beginning in 2010-2011) until this group the past few seasons. The rest of the All-SEC picks are a smattering of players from the other squads. Houston’s Sydney Torgerson (5’10” Sr. F) is the sole player on the list to earn her 4th All-SEC 1st or 2nd team selection. She shared the SEC Player of the Year with Lanesboro’s Ruen. Torgerson led Houston in scoring, rebounding, and steals, averaging 16.8 PPG, 8.6 RPG, and 3.9 SPG. She shot 60% from the field (163 of 272) and 70% (119 of 170) from the line. For her five-year career she finished with 1,792 points and 1,114 career rebounds, the only known “Journal-covered” athlete (since 2011) to post more than 1,000 career rebounds. Career-wise, she hit a whopping 457 of 670 free throws (68%), scored in double figures 91 times in 127 games, and notched 40 double-doubles. Torgerson finished as Houston’s all-time leading scorer, topping Alyssa Rostad (1,756) and Emma Geiwitz (1,660). Making All-SEC HM for the Hurricanes is Avery Kingsley (5’7” Fr. G > team second-best 8.8 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 2.6 APG, 35 of 83 threes, 42% clip). Kingsland gets one 1st team pick in Anika Reiland (5’5” Sr. G) and a 2nd team pick in Katelyn Hauser (5’9” Jr. G/F). Reiland repeated as All-SEC 1st team. Hauser moved up from HM. Reiland was the definition of a stat-sheet stuffer. The fastest player in the SEC averaged 10.4 PPG, 12.4 RPG, 4.6 APG, and 4.1 SPG. No other SEC player matched that versatility. She led Kingsland in rebounding, assists, and steals while finishing second in scoring. Reiland had 14 double-digit scoring games. She had 23 double-digit rebounding games (including 11 with 15-plus boards), impressive for a 5’6” guard. She had 15 double-doubles and three triple-doubles. Hauser led the Knights in scoring at 10.8 PPG and hit a team best 52 threes. Making All-SEC HM for the Knights is Ryley Guy (5’5” Jr. G/F > 7.1 PPG). Said girls helped Kingsland to a 21-win season. Rounding out the All-SEC 1st team picks is Mabel-Canton’s Kinley Soiney (5’10” Fr. G/F), the second frosh first teamer. Soiney led the Cougars in scoring, rebounding, and steals with 15.6 PPG, 9.0 RPG, and 3.9 SPG. She had 12 double-doubles and scored in double figures 25 times in 28 games. She should get to 1,000 career points as just a sophomore. Soiney was All-SEC 2nd team last season. Repeating as All-SEC HM for M-C is Hope Erickson (5’9” So. F > 6.4 PPG, 6.3 RPG). LeRoy-Ostrander and Spring Grove’s top selections each make All-SEC 2nd team. The Cardinals get two in Jordan Runde (5’8” Sr. G) and Benita Nolt (5’11” So. F/C). Runde led the Cardinals in scoring with 15.3 PPG and steals with 3.1 SPG while finishing second with 6.0 RPG. The senior scored in double figures 20 times while topping 1,000 career points in her final game, finishing with 1,001. Nolt averaged a double-double, 13.3 PPG and 11.8 RPG. She also had 3.5 combined steals/blocks per game (1.5 SPG, 1.9 BPG). Nolt had 12 double-doubles and authored seven games of 15 of more rebounds. Making All-SEC HM for the Cardinals is Jenna Olson (5’5” Jr. G > 4.0 PPG, 3.0 RPG, team-best 31 made threes). SG’s Addyson McHugh (5’10” Sr. F) makes 2nd team All-SEC.
