Girls Basketball: Warriors Top Trojans, #8 in AAA Byron Behind Klug’s Big Game

Caledonia girls basketball notched two good wins on the week. In TRC action, Scott Sorenson’s group built a 32-21 halftime lead on east foe Rushford-Peterson and prevailed 62-41. Aubrie Klug led the way with 19 points (4-4 FTs). Nicole Banse added 18 points (4-5 FTs). R-P was led by Torryn Schneider’s 20 points (9-9 FTs). She was the only Trojan with more than eight points. Kaia Loney added 7 (pts) and 9 (rebs). Caledonia shot 41% (24 of 59), R-P 26% (12 of 47). R-P is 0-2 in the TRC, 2-2 overall. The Warriors then battled #9 in AAA Byron at home. Caledonia both led by eight (39-31) and trailed by eight (55-47) in the second half. They trailed 60-56 with just over 3-minutes left, but scored on their final eight possessions. Klug and Byron’s Madison Ohm went back-forth, and back-forth again, hitting threes late. The last of the four-trifecta sequence, by Klug, tied the game 66-66 with 1:19 left. But Byron then scored just one point. Caledonia was 10 of 10 free throws in the last 3 minutes including 6 of 6 in the final 60 seconds. Two by Ashlyn Reinhart made it 68-66. A full-court TD-pass from Klug to Banse against the press moments later made it 70-66. Klug then hit two sets of free throws with 18.6 and 4.8 seconds left to ice the game, a big 74-67 Warrior win. Klug finished with 34 points (four threes). Banse added 15 points, Kensey King 8. Ohm had 29 including five threes to lead the Bears. Caledonia hit 23 of 28 free throws (82%) to the Bears 14 of 22 (64%). The Warriors (2-0, 3-1), after dropping the first game of the year, have won three in a row.

Girls Basketball: SG/M-C Enjoy Three-Win Week

In a span of three days, Spring Grove/Mabel-Canton won a key conference contest at Houston sandwiched between a pair of non-league wins over Iowa schools – (Lansing) Kee and North Fayette Valley – with blowout margins of 21, 27 and again 27 points. Siri Konkel scored her 1,000th career point versus Kee, and Kylie Hammel tallied her 1,000th point against NFV. It was a 66-45 decision at home versus Kee (1-2), but the Lions did not pull away until an 18-5 run early in the second half. The Hawks’ zone defense clogged up the inside, so the Lions poured in 42 perimeter points, drilling 12 of 37 shots from 3-point land (32%). Konkel nailed seven treys during a 25-point performance along with 5 assists. Kinley Soiney added 17 points along with 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 4 assists with no turnovers. Hammel helped with 10 points, 6 boards. Addison Winters led the Hawks with 21 points, 9 rebounds. There were 12 Lion steals among 24 Kee turnovers. In the key 56-29 SEC win at Houston (2-1 SEC, 3-2), the Lions again lit it up from downtown with 10 triples (38%, 34 perimeter points) and the defense again delivered with 17 steals among 27 Hurricane turnovers. Soiney put in 14 points, Hammel 13 and Konkel 13 as well. All 11 Lions rebounded with six each from Soiney and Izabel Kaufmann, but Houston won the backboard battle, 37 rebounds to 34. Jorja Meyer led the ‘Canes with 12 points and 11 boards. Olivia Yohe added 9 points, 6 rebounds. In the 46-19 waltz over NFV (0-4) at the annual Border Battles in Decorah, the Lions’ three-point proficiency waned considerably at 22% (6 for 27), but the defense dominated again with 20 steals contributing to a whopping 36 NFV turnovers. Konkel had a game-high 13 points and 4 steals. Both Hammel (7 points) and Kaufmann (6 points) had 4 thefts as well with 3 steals each from Layla Kittleson and Soiney (8 points). SG/MC improved to 2-0 SEC and 4-1 overall. The Lions now have three 1,000-point senior scorers on the team, as Kinley Soiney also has done so.
