Gary L. Lund, 80, of Spring Valley, Minn., died on Friday, December 1, 2023, at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, Minn.
Gary was born December 27, 1942, in Spring Grove, Minn., to Lawrence and Ella (Long) Lund. He liked to say that he was born and raised in Sheldon, Minn., a place dear to his heart. Gary married Della Kvall on June 12, 1960. Together they had three children: Sherry, Kevin and Shawn. Gary started out working in Spring Valley as a professional meat cutter, a skill that later served him well for all the deer he shot. Later he found what would be his lifelong profession; driving truck. Additionally, he sold and serviced Triggs horse trailers for many years. He worked for Ruan Transport, later drove for Rendahl Farms and then finished his trucking career at Crenlo, retiring in 2008. Even after retirement, Gary always found a way to stay busy; driving for CHS, delivering meals on wheels, and beekeeping/marketing honey.
Gary was no stranger to anyone. With a quick wit and great sense of humor, he was known to tell a good joke and some tall tales; he entertained everyone he met.
Gary enjoyed playing cards. He looked forward to spending time with his friends playing 500 every Monday and Thursday and breakfast group on Wednesdays. Being 100% Norwegian, he believed it was his ethnic duty to attend all lutefisk feeds. He loved anything that involved hunting and fishing. Gary liked to call himself the #1 deer slayer. Another passion was riding horse. He spent countless hours trail riding, camping, and attending horse shows. Gary was devoted to his wife and family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to him.
Gary will be deeply missed by his three children: Sherry (Brad) Peterson of Wykoff, Minn., Kevin (Missy) Lund of Spring Valley and Shawn (Adam) Hamilton of Preston, Minn.; six grandchildren; Paige Lund, Angella (Jeremiah) Evers, Axl (Kayla) Erie, Devin Lund, Tayler Lund and Sheyenne Hamilton; two great-grandchildren, MaKinzleigh Evers and Hayden Erie; sister Ramona (Harvey) Entsminger of Andover, Minn., and brother-in-law James (Anita) Kvall of Stewartville, Minn.; sister-in-law Norma Lund, Lakeville, Fla. and many nieces and nephews.
He is now reunited with his parents, wife Della, brothers Lawrence Lund Jr. and Steve Lund, sister Patsy VanTries, and sister-in-law Catherine Kvall.
Funeral services for Gary will be held on Friday, December 8, 2023, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, with Pastor Jolene Knudson-Hanse officiating. Burial will follow at Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2023, from 5-8 p.m. at Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley and will continue from 10-11 a.m. at the church on Friday. The family encourages that fishing, hunting or western attire be worn in Gary’s memory.
