The Lanesboro School Board heard final details on the first ever Lanesboro education conference at their regular school board meeting October 12. The conference will take place Thursday, October 20, and will consist of a keynote speaker, two different breakout sessions, and a closing speaker. There will be five different topics to choose from for the breakout sessions including educational strategies and mental health.
Superintendent Matt Schultz shared that breakfast will be supplied from the Lanesboro Pastry Shoppe, lunch from Pedal Pushers will be served, and treats will be available at the day’s end. Insulated lunch bags will be provided for each participant and other attendance prizes will be given as well.
Eighty people are registered to attend with half coming from Lanesboro School and the others from surrounding districts. The conference was set during the MEA break to make it easier for teachers to attend. The school board was invited to attend any of the sessions or to join the conference for lunch.
Strategic planning
Lanesboro School will be working on strategic planning soon. The last strategic planning sessions were in 2016 with Southeast Service Coop facilitating the sessions. SSC no longer provides this service. This time, former Dover-Eyota Superintendent Bruce Klaehn will be facilitating the sessions.
Tentatively, the first session will take place Thursday, November 3. At this session, a relatively large committee of people from all walks of life will discuss and choose the categories for the plan.
On Monday, November 14, a public forum will be held. Schultz noted that the community had really shown up for the forum the last time; he hopes for another good turn out.
Monday, November 28, the committee from the first session will meet again to work on the strategic planning.
When Sarah Peterson asked about board involvement, Schultz replied that last time, three board members had volunteered for the committee and all board members were encouraged to attend the public forum.
Building updates
Schultz reported that Novel Energy Solutions currently has the school’s solar panels and inverters on site. The racking is expected to arrive next week. Hopefully, the long-awaited solar panels will soon be installed.
Locks on two doors at the school have been repaired and panic bars at the daycare will soon be installed. In the meantime, parents will continue to use key fobs to access the facility.
The school boilers were put back together just in time for the colder weather. Next on the agenda is to replace plastic panels on the greenhouse.
Other business
In other business during their concise meeting the school board:
•Heard that the trial run with School Management Services was nearing the end; the board now needs to pick one or both of two different services offered by the company for the future if they want to continue to use them;
•Approved the hiring of Bobie Laganiere for the kitchen staff;
•Accepted the resignation of business teacher Nancy Earnhardt;
•Approved the 2022-2023 Crisis Management Plan after hearing there had been a correction to clarify room numbers on the map in the plan.
The next Lanesboro School Board meeting will be held November 9 in the forum room. The public is welcome to attend.
