Fire at Prosper apartments

On February 21, 2018, at approximately 11:11 p.m., the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center was notified by Winneshiek County, Iowa, Sheriff’s Office of a structure fire of an apartment building located in Fillmore County. The location of the fire was 11048 Hwy 52, known as the Old State Line Motel or Prosper Apartments. The Mabel and Canton Fire Departments responded, as well as the Harmony Ambulance and Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office. The fire was contained to Apartment #5 but adjacent apartments sustained heavy smoke damage. Apartment occupants have been accounted for and there were no known injuries. The State Fire Marshal has been contacted under normal practices and procedures and will be conducting an investigation. The Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office will assist with the investigation. The American Red Cross has been contacted and is involved in assisting the victims.

The Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens of the importance of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in their homes and businesses, whether owned or rented. Also, remember to test them and make sure they are in working order for your own personal safety and the safety of your families.
