At the February 26 Fillmore Central School Board meeting, Harmony resident Aaron Bishop asked if the board had any thoughts or plans in case the Department of Education is limited, altered, or discontinued. Superintendent Heath Olstad responded that there are many unknowns and no details to share currently. “I am confident at this time that the State of Minnesota has always been a state that values education,” he noted, adding that until further notice, he would remain confident in that thought.
The agenda for the meeting was approved as well as the minutes from the January 28 meeting. The claims were reviewed and approved with treasurer Sue Sikkink explaining several amounts on the financial report.
Artwork from the kids in School Age Care or SAC was submitted to a drawing contest for after-school clubs and schools called Young Artists Monster Madness. All of the Fillmore Central SAC kids’ drawings were chosen to be published in a book that includes artwork from students across the country. Congratulations were extended to the kids for their work. The SAC students will also be participating in a Postcrossing project in which they will send and receive postcards from all over the world.
ECFE is still looking for a coordinator/parent educator and child educator. Multiple positions are also open in SAC and the Child Care Center.
Superintendent Olstad reported that One Act did well and were sub-section champions. The girls basketball team had an excellent season and made it to quarterfinals. Boys basketball was seeded seventh and will be competing in the tournament. The wrestling team seeded seventh and three wrestlers went to the state wrestling meet. The spring sports season begins on March 10. The fifth and sixth grade Math Wizards did well in their final meet of the season. Parent teacher conferences will be held on March 6 and the end of the third quarter is March 27. February was I Love to Read month with elementary students filling out reading calendars to earn rewards, participating in dress-up days on Fridays. Each student received a free book thanks to a donation from the Preston Fire Department. The Large Group competition will be held on March 17 at the high school. The high school choir was able to sing the National Anthem at the Timberwolves game on February 23. The costs for that were covered by donations from local organizations.
A resignation effective at the end of the school year from elementary music teacher Matthew Patterson was approved.
A request from the teachers’ association was received, asking to begin the negotiations process for the next master agreement. The board approved the request.
The calendar committee met and completed the proposed 2025-26 school calendar. The number of student days was kept at 172 to allow enough teacher training days. The board approved the calendar.
