At the January 27 Fillmore Central School Board meeting, the board committee assignments were set for the 2026 year. All board members will continue to serve on the same committees as last year. The official appointments and designations for 2026 were also set with all staying the same as 2025.
The Math Wizards did well at their first competition of the season on January 5. One of the sixth grade teams placed first in the team round. The FastBridge testing and reading screeners are being completed at the elementary school. February is I Love to Read month, and activities are being planned for the elementary students to celebrate and encourage reading.
Sign-ups for spring sports closed on January 16, and the season will be starting soon. One Act placed third at conference on January 17 and as champions at sub-sections on January 24. They will compete at sections on January 31. “Congrats to Jackie Whitacre and the students who performed,” Superintendent Heath Olstad said. On January 22, One Act performed at the high school theater which was dedicated that night and named the Robert O’Reilly theater in honor of long-standing teacher and director.
Angi Kaase reported that the preschool received funds from the Preston Fire Department to purchase toboggans and floor surfers. The easels from the outdoor classroom have been moved inside during the cold weather so the kids can continue to enjoy them. The daycare staff are working on Quality Improvement Classes for the Daycare Parent Aware Re-rating, and the daycare continues to receive funds from the Great Start Compensation Support Grant. The kids in SAC will be making Valentines for the residents of the Gundersen Harmony Care Center. The book, “Perfect Pet,” that the SAC students drew pictures for will be published in February. There are several open positions in the daycare and SAC.
Carrie Mathison gave an update on the Community Ed committee. The daycare has had a newsletter for some time, but now a public version will be published on the school’s website and Facebook page. The daycare is working on simplifying and streamlining deposits for the infant room waitlist.
Connie Lindstrom’s contract was amended to include the second semester of the 2025-26 school year. A resignation was accepted from Andy Todd as the assistant golf coach. Caleb Fischer, Joel Thomas and Cole Sass were approved as volunteer wrestling coaches. The spring coaches were approved as well. Amanda Jansen will serve as assistant softball coach, Aaron Mensink as girls golf head coach, Brad Holten as boys golf head coach, Ty Sloan as boys golf assistant coach, Andy Todd as boys golf volunteer, Josh Jones as the head baseball coach, Doc Schoepski as assistant baseball coach, and Andrew Johnson as baseball volunteer.
A fund transfer of $103.75 was approved for the milk break/lunch assistance fund.
A $50 activity fee per participant was approved for clay target. The sport has been so popular that a fall season is also being considered.
The Alternative Learning Program or ALP Summer Program was approved. Marsh Dowe-Indahl will work as the teacher for the program which will run one day a week for eight weeks during June and July. If over seven students sign up per session, a paraprofessional will also be hired to help.
Superintendent Olstad said that the radon mitigation system in the lower level of the high school has been completed and recent radon test results indicate that it is working well.
The results of a unanimous electronic vote to name the theater at the high school the Robert O’Reilly Theater were approved.
The February 24 school board meeting may conflict with a playoff basketball game. The board approved a motion to move it to 7 a.m. that day.
