It has been an interesting year for FC girls basketball. They started 0-7. Abby Bothun had some nice games, but went down to injury. Levi Olstad’s group owns just two league wins (albeit in the unforgiving TRC) and a below-f500 overall record. But the Falcons, courtesy of three wins versus 1A foes the week of Monday, February 7, have won nine of their last 10 games versus their section. First, Mabel-Canton fell 68-27. FC swept a home-and-home series. The Falcons hit 9 of 22 threes (41%). M-C was 1 of 7 (14%). Courtney Hershberger (15 pts, 3-6 threes, 6-11 FGs) and Lauren Mensink (14 pts, 3-5 threes, 5-8 FGs) hit double-figures. Alyssa Britton (9 pts, 4-6 FGs) and Kammry Broadwater (4 pts, 2-6 FGs, 8 asts, 7 stls) helped. Kinley Soiney (10 pts, 5 rebs) paced the Cougars. FC then trekked to Spring Grove and dispatched with the Lions 78-36. The Falcons had a 34-to-25 rebound advantage and fewer than half as many turnovers (11 to 23). FC outscored SG in transition 26-5. They out-shot SG 48% (30 of 62) to 24% (12 of 49). Five Falcons made double figures. Madison Simon (17 pts) and Mensink (16 pts, 7 rebs) were the top two scorers. Broadwater (12 pts, 9 rebs, 12 asts, 4 stls) flirted with a triple-double. Jersey Ristau (12 pts, 4-6 FGs) and Hershberger (11 pts, 3-8 FGs) helped. Addyson McHugh (12 pts, 3-7 threes) led SG. Katelyn Kraus (9 pts, 6 rebs) and Kylie Hammel (8 pts) helped. It was the ninth time FC held an opponent at or below 40 points. FC is 9-0 in those games (eight came against 1A foes). The week ended with a re-match at Rushford-Peterson. The Trojans won in December 56-53. The game featured 12 ties, the last at 49-49. Lauren Mensink then hit a transition three (1:56) making it 52-49 FC. One trip later, Broadwater made two free throws (1:11) making it 54-49. R-P’s Kaylee Ruberg scored (0:17.4) to make it a one possession contest (54-51), but FC’s Hershberger sank the second of two freebies (0:13) to ice it. FC got revenge by a 56-52 final. Broadwater (14 pts, 10 rebs) and Simon (10 pts, 8 rebs) hit double figures. Mensink (9 pts, 4 slts), Hershberger (8 pts, 4 stls), and Britton (7 pts, 6 rebs) helped. Ruberg (19 pts, 17 rebs, 5 stls) led the Trojans. Ellie Ekern added 11 points. Emarie Jacobson chipped in 7 (pts) and 7 (rebs). FC held a big edge at the free throw line; 19 of 32 (59%) to R-P’s 9 of 14 (64%). The Falcons sank 9 of 12 in the final 4:17. FC improved to 2-9, 10-13. R-P fell to 3-9, 10-14.
