At the March 25 Fillmore Central School Board meeting, Superintendent Heath Olstad reported that the elementary school is in the middle of conducting the annual MCA testing. The 19 high school juniors who chose to take the ACT took it earlier that day. Parent teacher conferences were held on March 6 and the end of the 3rd quarter is on March 27. Congratulations were extended to One Act as the team was named Sub Section Champion. Speech has already started, and Olstad noted that Jackie Whitacre does a great job leading both the One Act and Speech teams. The Large Group competition was hosted at the high school last week and both the Fillmore Central band and choir received the highest rating of superior.
The boys basketball team received the #7 seed and the girls basketball team received #8. Congratulations were extended to wrestlers Kane Larson, Cole Sass and Charlotte Ferrie for qualifying for the state individual wrestling tournament.
Multiple positions are open at the One Block at a Time daycare and ECFE. The waitlist to get in the daycare is currently out into late 2026. The SAC program is planning to start its Postcrossing project in April where the kids will send and received postcards from all over the world. The ECFE Easter Egg Hunts are being planned for April 12 in Preston and April 19 in Harmony.
Austin Bahler, Nicholas Mensink, Andy Johnson, Cooper Ferrie and Peyton Olson were approved as the volunteer baseball coaches and Derek O’Connor was approved as the softball coach. Jackie Whitacre was hired as the director for the spring musical with Sarah Holten as the assistant and accompanist. Paula Birch, Connie Berg, Amanda Thomas and Jennifer Lindstrom were approved to work as the Extended School Year teachers. A resignation was accepted from ninth grade advisor Sarah Holten effective at the end of this school year.
The board reviewed and approved the services and fees for 2025 from Region V Computer Services. Superintendent Olstad noted that the district has been using the company for over 15 years and that the services it offers are very valuable to the school.
Olstad was designated as the identified official with authority to authorize user access to the Minnesota Department of Education’s secure websites.
The Extended School Year or ESY program was reviewed. It will be available for both elementary and high school special education students for a total of 10 days during the summer. The dates will be August 4-8 and 11-15 from 8-11 a.m. The board approved the ESY dates.
The contract with Taher for food services at the elementary and high school was renewed for the 2025-26 school year.
Chris Mensink put together a list of families who need assistance for the elementary supply fees. The board approved a transfer of funds from the Angel Fund to the Elementary Supply Fee Revenue Account and the Healthy Snack Fund.
Several open enrollment requests were approved.
Superintendent Olstad noted that a variety of committee meetings are coming up. The vendor committee may need to post bids for transportation this year as it’s required to do so periodically. He said that the district is very happy with Harmony Transit so they’re not looking to change vendors.
