Evelyn Halvorson obituary, Fillmore County Journal

Evelyn J. Halverson, age 95, of Mabel, Minnesota, died Tuesday, December 23, 2025 at Gundersen Tweeten Care Center in Spring Grove.

Evelyn was born March 4, 1930, in Highland Township in Winneshiek County to Theodore and Stella (Larson) Bjerke. She attended Kjome Country schools then the Spring Grove High School. On September 25, 1948, she married Orvin Halverson at the Highland Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, Iowa. They lived in Spring Grove Township, Houston County, where Orvin managed Wold Sundown Valley Farms for 49 years before moving into Mabel in 2000.  Evelyn cleaned for many families and businesses in the area.

Highland Lutheran Church was an important part of Evelyn’s life where she was an active member until recent years. Her family was most important to her and enjoyed gardening and flowers, and collecting nicknacks

Evelyn is survived by six children: Merlin (Barb) of Mabel, Sharon (Charles) Ehler of Ames, Iowa, Arlen (Genette), Audrey (Donald) Anderson and Gary, all of Mabel, and Greg (Deanna) of Waukon, Iowa; 13 grandchildren: Tina (Matt) Veschio, Gene (Caryn) Halverson, Paul Ehler, Matt (Nichole) Ehler, Amelia (Tyler) Dohlman, Becky (Doug) Lind, Stephanie (Ron) Liddiard, Nathan (Lisa) Halverson, and Andrew (Nichole) Halverson, Sarah (Paul) Tollefsrud, Carrie Anderson, Owen (fiancé Hannah) Halverson, and Sophie Halverson; great-grandchildren Hudson and Hadley Halverson, Lucien Veschio, Archie, Kit and Jones Dohlman, Colby (Tracy) Lind, Chellsey (Brad) Lind, Lakyn (Ryan) Lind, Danielle (Shane) Kingsley, Kjersta (David) Donnelly, Hans Lind, Jens (Elizabeth) Lind, Michael (Haylee) Williams, Mitchell (Nicole) Williams, Tanner (Jordan) Williams, Victoria Williams, Grace (Reese) Reisinger, Reid Liddiard, Ella Halverson, Nolan Halverson, Gavin Halverson, Lainey Halverson, Aubrey Halverson, Isaac Halverson, and Jaymeson, Cayden, Brevyn and Treyson Tollefsrud; great-great-grandchildren Tate, Channing, Laramie and Legacy Lind, Cora and Sylvi Olson, Mya Kingsley, Saige Mesch, Kaylin, Addison and Wade Donnelly, Raya, Vera and Lenora Williams, Jersey Williams, and Josie and Chet Reisinger; two brothers, Lyle (Joyce) Bjerke and Ron (Carol) Bjerke; sisters-in-law Judy Dahle and Shelby Bjerke, cousin Donavan (Sharon) Larson, and several nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Orvin, an infant daughter, Evelyn; her parents, and two brothers, Harold and Tilford.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, January 2, 2026, at the Highland Lutheran Church 3824 Highlandville Road, Decorah, Iowa 52101, with the Rev. Matthew Becker officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be 4–7 p.m. Thursday, January 1 at the Mengis Funeral Home, 301 N. Maple St., Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials are preferred to Highland Lutheran WELCA.
