Donnie James Simonson, 76, of Grand Meadow, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2025, at the Spring Valley Care Center after a courageous battle with cancer.
Donnie was born on August 28, 1949, in Rochester, Minn., to Everett and Violet (Waller) Simonson. He graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1968.
Following graduation, Donnie attended Austin Area Vocational School for a few months before enlisting in the Army later that year. After completing basic and advanced training, Donnie arrived in the Mekong River area of South Vietnam for a year-long tour. He was stationed with a reconnaissance group for most of his service, frequently engaging with Viet Cong troops as he proudly served his country in the Vietnam War. During his service, Donnie returned home as a highly decorated soldier, earning numerous medals, including two Silver Stars and two Purple Hearts, in recognition of his bravery and sacrifice.
In 1972, Donnie married Pamela Fisher and together they had one son, Cory. They later divorced.
Donnie worked at Crenlo and Stauffer Chemical, and he was very active with the Grand Meadow Legion Club.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandsons, attending many of their athletic events, and sharing in family activities. Donnie also loved riding motorcycles, hunting, fishing, and visiting with friends. He especially cherished time spent with his sisters and nieces making Norwegian krub and lefse, a beloved family tradition.
Donnie is survived by his son Cory (Cindy) Simonson, grandsons Carter, Caden and Colin; sisters Lanna (Ron) Gehling, Jeanie (Denny) King, Rhonda (Mike) Ptacek, and Julie (Marty) Stier; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless dear friends.
Many dear friends whom he cherished called and visited during his difficult battle with cancer. His family graciously thanks those calls and visits by family and loved ones during his cancer journey. Those who knew Donnie remember his generous heart and his willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need.
He was preceded in death by his parents Everett and Violet Simonson.
Donnie was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
Per Donnie’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to his grandsons.
Memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, November 22, 2025, at the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held 4-8 p.m. Friday November 21, 2025, also at the church and will continue for one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
