Donis McCallum obituary, Fillmore County Journal

Donis Dell Hutton McCallum, age 92, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2026, at Samaritan Bethany in Rochester, Minnesota.

Donis was born on August 12, 1934, to Helen (Madson) and Wallace Hutton. She grew up on a farm near Harmony, Minnesota, with her five siblings. Many of her childhood memories involved attending church at Scotland Presbyterian Church in Harmony, Minnesota. Donis and her family were enthusiastic participants during the singing of hymns at the church.

Donis was Homecoming Queen at Harmony High School and graduated from the school in 1952. She then attended Winona Teachers College in Winona, Minnesota. At Winona, she met Dick McCallum. Dick and Donis were married in 1953. Their marriage would span 67 years, ending with Dick’s passing in 2021.

Together they would raise four children in Rochester: Craig (Kate) of Stoughton, Wisconsin, Scott (Shirley) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Jeff (Gretchen), and Todd (Tara) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. While raising her sons, Donis spent countless happy hours on the sidelines and in the stands at Mayo High School events.

Donis was extremely proud of her membership in the choir at Christ United Methodist Church. For over 50 years she attended Thursday night practices and often performed at multiple Sunday services. She loved her experiences touring with the choir, especially on trips to New York City and Europe.

Donis also valued time spent with her sisters Pat and Naomi. The sisters made many trips around the Midwest to celebrate their Norwegian heritage at gatherings known as Totenlogs. The trio also gathered annually to celebrate each other’s birthdays.

Donis was employed at the Mayo Clinic for nearly 20 years, working overnights in the registration department. Her retirement provided the opportunity for the entire family to gather to celebrate her efforts at the Clinic.

Her greatest source of pride was her family. Along with her sons she is survived by grandchildren Marit (Nik), Zebulon (Annika), Matthew (Meg), Ethan (Aimee), Kelly, Amber (Seth), Annika (Sal), Davis, Eliza, Claire and Adelyn; as well as great-grandchildren Liesl, Callan, Carly, Bryn, Owen, and Danielle. Donis is also survived by her brother Bob (Lynn) Hutton as well as sister in law Arla Hutton.

Donis was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings Pat, Peter, Naomi and Dan.

Donis spent her final years at Samaritan Bethany in Rochester. She built many friendships with other residents and staff members during this time. Donis treasured many visits from her nieces Sue and Angie, and nephew Jeff. The group spent many hours sipping coffee and reminiscing about the old days during Donis’ time at Samaritan Bethany.

A memorial service will be held Monday, October 19, 2026, at 10 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 400 5th Ave. SW, Rochester. Interment will follow at 12 p.m. at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, Minnesota.
