David Alan Boe, of rural Lanesboro, Minn., passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 22, 2018, as a result of mesothelioma. He was born July 20, 1949, in Minot, N. Dak., to Theodore and Viola Boe. His father worked construction so the family moved often, finally settling in Spokane, Wash.
At age 17, David enlisted in the U.S. Army and volunteered for Vietnam, where he was a heavy equipment mechanic. Shortly after finishing his Army tour he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he was an avionics technician.
On March 3, 1977, David married Nancy Highum Werner, who was also serving in the Air Force. After leaving the military they lived and worked in Spokane. They moved to southeast Minnesota in 1986, where they bought a small farm five miles from Nancy’s home of Peterson.
David thrived on learning and would figure out how to fix anything and to do just about anything he had an interest in. His working career after the military included several years as a manufacturing engineer in Spokane and later in Rushford, Minn. He then managed the Peterson Credit Union for 11 years while operating the couple’s small farm.
Dave taught himself to make beautiful stained glass windows and worked part-time for a Winona firm producing church windows. For the past several years David and Nancy spent winters hiking and exploring in the mountains of southwestern New Mexico.
He is survived by his wife, son Eric (Melissa) Werner, step grandson McCartney, sister Carol Lanctot, and many other loving family members. We remain thankful for the peace he reached before passing, and we are so grateful for all the wonderful memories and adventures.
In accordance with Dave’s wishes, a private family memorial will be held at a later date.
