Daniel Leo Leisen

April 22, 2025 by Fillmore County Journal

Daniel Leisen obituary, Fillmore County Journal

Daniel Leo Leisen, 71, a decorated Army Green Beret, beloved father, grandfather, husband, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2025, in Rushford surrounded by family.

Born on July 14, 1953, in Wabasha, Minn., to Mary (Hartert) and Leo Leisen, Dan lived a life of courage, service, and devotion. As a proud Sergeant (E-5), Dan served in the Vietnam War with the 197th Battalion, 5th Special Forces, and the 101st Airborne Division “Screaming Eagles.” His bravery earned him two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and other distinguished medals. While his work ethic shone as a maintenance supervisor, Dan’s heart belonged to his family and his hobbies. Though often frustrated as a Minnesota sports fan, he cheered fiercely for his teams. A passionate hunter, fisherman, and woodworker, he crafted treasures for loved ones. Above all, Dan cherished family time.

Dan is survived by Kris, his wife of 36 years; his children Ben Leisen (Amanda), Nick Leisen, and Leah Bomar (Christian); and his grandchildren Nolan and Clara Leisen. He is also survived by his siblings Susan (Terry) Peterson, Jane (Ron) McNamara, Brendan (Julie) Leisen, Tim (Lisa Schossow) Leisen, Jerre (Bob) Klinger, Scott Leisen, and Bill (Angie) Leisen; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son Taylor.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2025, and from 10:30-11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2025, with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. at Hoff Funeral Home in Rushford, Minn. Burial with full military honors will occur at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the DAV – Disabled American Veterans. Dan’s legacy endures. “Duty first, family always, and Leisen strong,” he’d say. Forever in our hearts.

Hoff Funeral Home Rushford is assisting the family with arrangements. Please visit www.hofffuneral.com to leave an online condolence.

He was not in 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne). The “197th Battalion” in Vietnam likely refers to the 197th Infantry Battalion, a unit that was part of the 197th Infantry Brigade, which was part of the 23rd Infantry Division, also known as the “Americal Division”. This unit was active during the Vietnam War, and the 197th Infantry Battalion saw extensive combat during that conflict.
