Cross Country: GMLOS Boys Take Second at Hayfield Invite

September 18, 2023 by Paul Trende

The GMLOS boys team (black, blue, and red) gets to running at the start of the Hayfield cross country invite. Led by Carter Glynn (in front, second from left) and Erik Shaw (in front, first from right), who took second and fifth respectively, the guys took second as a team and only by sixth runner tiebreaker.

Second place finishes highlighted the Hayfield cross country invite, as it pertained to “Journal-covered” teams GMLOS and Chatfield. On the guys side, McKenzie Bradley’s GM group notched a team second place finish (63) by tying with Pine Island (63) but losing sixth runner tie-breaker.  PI’s sixth took 30th, GMLOS’ 35th. Chatfield also competed, taking fifth of eight total teams. GMLOS’ top runner, sophomore Carter Glynn, notched his top varsity finish ever. He took second (17:30.99) to Panther Bo Rosane (17:25.44) ahead of Z-M/K-W’s Jacob Williams (17:31.69). GMLOS’ Erik Shaw (5th place > 17:47.07) and Teague Alden (11th place > 18:27.19) also finished top 15, as did Chatfield’s Maddex Lanning (12th place > 18:28.09). Gophers Grayson Fister (19th place) and Aiden Johnsrud (20th place) made the top 20. Sixty-six runners competed at the 5,000-meter race. PI’s girls (55) topped Austin Pacelli (86) and Chatfield (103) for the girls title of 11 full teams. Kingsland took eighth and GMLOS 11th. Pacelli’s Kya McManus (19:28.26) topped Chatfield’s Levi Kivimagi (20:04.6) and Goodhue’s Mari O’Connor (20:11.37) for the girls individual crown. It was Kivimagi’s second top five finish this year. Chatfield’s Charlotte Oeltjen (7th place > 20:57.17) and Kingsland’s Kaylie Betts (14th place > 22:01.11) made the top 15. Gopher Marianna Miron (20th place) and Knight Kylie Meyer (26th place) made the top 30 of 77 runners at the 5,000-meter race.

Kingsland’s Kaylie Betts runs hard versus PEM’s Cate Rehman at the Hayfield Cross Country event. Betts finished 14th to lead the Knight girls. Of “Journal-covered” runners, only Chatfield’s Lexi Kivimagi (second) and Charlotte Oeltjen (seventh) were better.
