COVID-19 update as of September 17, 2020

September 21, 2020 by Jason Sethre Leave a Comment

Since worldwide tracking of COVID-19 began on January 23, 2020, there have been 29,960,718 total cases (up from 27,933,388 a week ago) with 942,631 fatalities (up from 905,181 a week ago) — 3.15% of total cases (down from 3.24% a week ago).

In the United States, there have been 6,724,179 total cases (up from 6,471,218 a week ago) resulting in 199,746 deaths (up from 194,367 a week ago) — 2.97% of total cases.

Among Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, there have been a combined total of 565,689 cases (up from 529,932 as week ago) resulting in 13,468 deaths (up from 13,117 a week ago) — 2.38% of total cases (down from 2.48% a week ago).

Throughout the six state area, the percentage of deaths out of the total number of cases is on the decline in each of those states.

• Iowa: 1.62% this week, 1.67% last week

• Illinois: 3.20% this week, 3.30% last week

• Minnesota: 2.29% this week, 2.34% last week

• North Dakota: 1.09% this week, 1.13% last week

• South Dakota: 1.10% this week, 1.12% last week

• Wisconsin: 1.26% this week, 1.34% last week

In the State of Minnesota, there are still two counties with zero cases: Cook County and Lake of the Woods County.  South Dakota still has 10 counties with no cases.  Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, and North Dakota have had cases in every county.

Within the Fillmore County Journal circulation area, the numbers are again somewhat incomplete due to the Minnesota Department of Health only providing a total number of cases per city once that city exceeds five cases.  Eight out of the 18 communities we serve have cases equal to or less than five, but the specific numbers have not been made readily available by the MDH.  We have reached out to Minnesota Department of Health for more specific information for those communities now and in the future, and we have continued to receive no response.
