COVID-19 update as of October 29, 2020

November 2, 2020 by Jason Sethre

By Jason Sethre

Since worldwide tracking of COVID-19 began on January 23, 2020, there have been 44,644,423 total cases (up from 40,652,097 a week ago) with 1,176,328 fatalities (up from 1,122,036 a week ago) — 2.63% of total cases (down from 2.76% a week ago).

In the United States, there have been 8,949,332 total cases (up from 8,433,007 a week ago) resulting in 231,033 deaths (up from 225,399 a week ago) — 2.67% of total cases.

National media organizations have reported a spike in COVID-19 cases leading up to Election Day on November 3, 2020.

Among Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, there have been a combined total of 780,317 cases (up from 707,416 as week ago) resulting in 15,217 deaths (up from 14,660 a week ago) — 1.95% of total cases (down from 2.07% a week ago).

Throughout the six state area, the percentage of deaths out of the total number of cases is either on the decline in each of the six Midwest states or has plateaued over the past several weeks.  Wisconsin continues to decline to the lowest rate in the six-state area.

• Iowa: 1.39% this week, 1.44% last week

• Illinois: 2.51% this week, 2.67% last week

•Minnesota: 1.72% this week, 1.84% last week

• North Dakota: 1.21% this week, 1.25% last week

• South Dakota: 0.91% this week, 0.95% last week

• Wisconsin: 0.88% this week, 0.89% last week

Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota have all reported COVID-19 positive cases in every county.  South Dakota still has one county with no cases.

Within the Fillmore County Journal circulation area, the numbers are again somewhat incomplete due to the Minnesota Department of Health only providing a total number of cases per city once that city exceeds five cases.  Four out of the 18 communities we serve have cases equal to or less than five, but the specific numbers have not been made readily available by the MDH.
