Cory L. Folstad, age 53, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Decorah on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
He was born April 13, 1971, in Decorah, Iowa, to Marvin and Linda Folstad. Cory was baptized and confirmed at Hesper Lutheran Church. He attended Decorah High School and graduated with the Class of 1989. His interest in hunting, fishing and the outdoors led him to Vermillion Community College in Ely, Minn., where he studied Forestry Management. After completing a year of study at Vermillion he charted a different course and enrolled at NICC in Calmar. There he took courses for Farm Implement Mechanics.
Throughout his lifetime Cory worked at a variety of jobs. He spent a few years working in construction, and in local businesses such as Deco Products, Iowa Rotocast, SCI, and others. In addition to hunting, fishing and outdoor activities he enjoyed reading, cooking, local history, fixing things, and spending time with his daughter, who he affectionately nicknamed “Bucko.” He was skilled at welding and had a creative mind for “recycling” old household items, once fashioning a TV antennae from a pizza pan!
Cory met Anita Opat, a special love of his life, and together they had a daughter. Alexis Sarah was born February 12, 1999. Alexis was Cory’s most precious blessing and he relished the time they spent together, shopping for groceries and cooking up delicious meals to share. Cory and Anita later separated.
Cory is survived by his daughter Alexis of La Crescent, Minn.; parents Marvin and Linda of Hesper, Iowa; a sister, Tanya (Nick) Jore; aunts June Wood, Joyce (Lyle) Bjerke, Mary (Les) Myhre, Sonya (Jerry) Gunderson, and Colleen (Kermit) Meyer; uncles Wayne Sorenson, Les (Nancy) Folstad, Dean (Kim) Folstad, and Gerald (Elsa) Folstad; and several nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his aunt Diane Day, maternal grandparents Ray and Betty Sorenson, and paternal grandparents Melvin and Lelah Folstad.
Funeral services will be held at Hesper Lutheran Church on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at 1 p.m., with a time of visitation at the church from 12 p.m. until the time of the funeral. Burial will be in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. The Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel is assisting with arrangements.
