Chatfield assesses storm water damage

July 15, 2019 by Karen Reisner

Fillmore County Journal - Chatfield MN

At Chatfield’s July 8 city council meeting, Brian Burkholder stated the city had quite a lot of water damage with the recent heavy rain. They are working with Fillmore and Olmsted Counties to obtain some state funding.

Councilor Paul Novotny reported the Public Works committee discussed storm water damage, most of which is down CR 10. They are getting some quotes. It was an extraordinary amount of water in a short time. Novotny expected there would have been more severe damage without the rip rap that had been installed in that area.

Areas of storm water damage discussed included Union St. NE, Burr Oak NE, Hill St., Old Territorial Rd., Sunset Ln. area, Margaret/James St. French drain, Shady Oak Park area, and Prospect St.

EDA Loan

Chris Giesen, EDA, said city staff and EDA members present at the last meeting recommended approval of a $55,500 loan sought by Josh Broadwater LLC to assist in the purchase of property at 1596 Enterprise Dr. SE. There was not a quorum at the EDA meeting so it was not an official EDA committee recommendation.

The loan is to be paid back over 10 years at 4% interest. Broadwater intends to construct a multi-unit commercial building on the property. The loan request was approved as presented. Councilor Josh Broadwater abstained.

Other business in brief

•A liquor license extension was approved for Jac’s for the August 10 street dance.

•A pay request from Burbach Aquatics, Inc. in the amount of $52,205.69 was approved. An amount of $2,625 for a funding campaign drive was waived by Burbach Aquatics. An estimated $480,028 for services related to the swimming pool will be requested and due in July 2020.

•Mayor Russ Smith noted the passing of Marion Lund, 88, who was a fixture in Chatfield. Smith said she did a lot for the community and was a “heck of a gal.”

•Broadwater praised the Chatfield Ambulance for their fast response after what he called his recent “mishap.” He said their service is valuable and super professional.

•Councilor Pam Bluhm reported buttons for Western Days will be on sale next week.
