Charlotte Blanche Johnson, age 93, of Whalan, Minn., passed away peacefully at her home on May 12, 2023, surrounded by her family. Charlotte was born on December 30, 1929, to Corday and Betsy Thompson in Lanesboro, Minn. Charlotte attended the Lanesboro Schools, where her love of books began. She continued her education at the Teacher’s College in Winona earning bachelor degrees in Library Science and English. In 1950 she was united in marriage to Gene Johnson. Together they raised three children: Rod, Larry, and Lori. She taught kindergarten in Preston and Lanesboro in her early years. She then spent many years as the librarian and English teacher in Peterson and Rushford. After retirement Char traveled over much of the U.S. and to several countries abroad. She loved being outdoors, mowing her own lawn into her upper 80’s. She was an avid reader, enjoyed the arts and spent time walking, biking, camping, and boating. Her favorite pastime was spending quality time with family, extended family and friends. Charlotte was often approached by past students and colleagues recalling times they spent together in school and the difference she made in their lives. Her warm smile, compassion and unfailing kindness affected everyone she met. Although she was always active in her church she was water baptized at age 91, which began her journey to becoming a true born again follower of Jesus Christ. Char was a devoted volunteer belonging to many community organizations throughout the area. She was known for her paper mache projects and floats she created throughout the years!
Charlotte is survived by her three children: Rod (Brenda) Johnson, Hendersonville, N. C., Larry (Sheryl) Johnson, Whalan, Minn., and Lori (Paul) Ulrich, Rushford, Minn. She has seven grandchildren: Colleen, Lindsey, Riley, Matthew, Brittany, Brigetta, and Lucas; and nine great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings (and best friends) include Robert Thompson and Phyllis (Nestor) Chiglo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gene, siblings Donald Thompson, Mavis Johnson, and Marge Drake; sisters-in-law Beverly Thompson and Marilyn Thompson, and brothers-in-law Donald Johnson, and David Drake.
Charlotte, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend will be missed by all who knew her.

Julie Hanson Hignell says
Charlotte Johnson was a very important teacher for me and all my siblings at Peterson High School. I wish every kid could have a fun, compassionate, understanding mentor who is able, at the same time, to challenge and encourage them to take risks and reach far or dream big like she was. I loved running into her occasionally ever since to reminisce about our time at PHS–she remembered so many funny and important moments just like all of us students did.
