Charles Bernard Casterton was born on June 27, 1956, to Bernard and Martha (Hovey) Casterton in Decorah, Iowa. He was the oldest of four siblings and found great pleasure when someone would comment that he didn’t “look” like the oldest child. Chuck grew up on his family’s Century Farm and enjoyed all aspects of farm life. His love of horses remained with him throughout his life.
Chuck began working for Roger Fjelstul in 1973 in both the funeral home and furniture store. In 1979 he purchased Decorah Furniture Co. and remained working until two days before his passing. He truly loved his profession with its haggling and conversation.
Through his first marriage the births of a son, Justin, and daughter, Kelly made Chuck a father. Always so proud of them both with each milestone in life. Paramount was witnessing the wonderful parents they became. His kids hold a deeply special place in their dad’s heart.
Chuck and Deanna were married on September 9, 2000, and together formed a true partnership that endured for 25 years of marriage and 35 years of shared commitment. Through every season, good times and especially the hardest, they were a perfect team. Deanna remained Chuck’s most steadfast supporter and devoted protector, loving him with unwavering strength and care.
Chuck dearly loved his grandchildren and took great pride in being their Papa. Being kept on his toes with the joyful messes, noises, and chaos that came with grandchildren brought Chuck immense joy.
A profound happiness was found on the water. From boating the Mississippi River to cruising the Gulf of Mexico in Florida, Chuck loved the beauty and adventure it brought. A good day was spent with a fishing rod in his hand; he never cared much what was on the other end of the line, just as long as something was biting.
Chuck will be deeply missed by his wife Deanna Casterton, his children Justin (Katie) Casterton and Kelly (Josh) Dee, his grandchildren: Ida Welsh, Lela Dee, Ava and Carson Casterton; his siblings: Steve Casterton, Judy (Kevin) Lansing, and Paul (Patty) Casterton; his mother-in-law,Donna Erickson, brothers-in-law Mat (Aubrey) Rude and Paul (Yer) Rude; nieces and nephews: Kelly (Jeff) Evans, Darrah (Mitch) Holland, Micole (Josey) Jewell, Augusta (Jacob) Roher, and Audrey Casterton.
Chuck has reunited with his parents Bernard and Martha, fathers-in-law Parney Rude and Duane Erickson, nephew and Godson, Danan Lansing; his grandparents Josiah and Augusta Casterton and Clarence and Clara Hovey, along with many cherished, extended family members.
Chuck was a noble man. He lived deeply, loved fully, and showed up for the people in his life in simple but meaningful ways. Many times, he phoned for no reason other than to say, “I’m just checking on you.” This small phrase carried his heart, his kindness, and the steady love he gave so freely to those around him.
Many will say now is the time for Chuck to rest. Yes, he will likely rest for a few days but then begin working on his to-do list. His meticulous eye sees things at his new home that need his attention.
