Spring Grove out-hit both opponents but was foiled by errors against Goodhue and stranded 10 runners versus Rushford-Peterson. SG … [Read more...]

Baseball: Falcons Roll With State Ranking

May 15, 2023 by Paul Trende

When was the last time Fillmore Central/Lanesboro baseball was state ranked? It has been a while (if ever). The 2023 Falcons continued their strong season with three more TRC wins, running their win streak to four. At PEM, FC/L had a four run sixth to annul a 1-0 deficit. The frame propelled the Falcons to a 4-1 victory over the AA Bulldogs. Cooper Ferrie (7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, … [Read more...]

The Gophers girls (129) were a headliner, winning the team portion over the Burros (117) and Tro-Canes (109) while the host Saints, Waseca, L-A, and Hayfield also competed. Golf: Burro Teams Sweep Trojan Invite

May 15, 2023 by Paul Trende

“Journal 11” golf teams do not host tournaments too often. Rushford-Peterson did so this year with six full boys teams and five full girls teams. Lanesboro’s squads won both events. The boys kept up their strong season by outshooting Chatfield, 360 to 361. R-P (407) and D-E (408) hotly contested third and fourth place. L-A (414) and Houston (445) followed. Two 8th graders … [Read more...]

Softball: Hurricanes Stay Unbeaten With Five Wins

May 15, 2023 by Paul Trende

There was a time, in the 2000s, when Houston softball was a powerhouse. Their last Austin trip and last SEC title were in 2013. Whether this year will buck those decades-long droughts is yet to be determined. A doubleheader with Southland May 16 will be a key decider in the first. But Houston is amidst their best season in years, courtesy of a five-win week. Josh Swenson’s … [Read more...]

Ezra Griffin home run ignites Spring Grove rally past Wabasha-Kellogg

May 11, 2023 by Lee Epps

One swing of the bat by Ezra Griffin seemed to change anything in Spring Grove’s 7-3 non-conference baseball win over visiting Wabasha-Kellogg on May 8. In last season’s section game, Falcon freshman Cole Scheel had tossed a one-hit shutout to end Spring Grove’s season. In this 2023 rematch, Scheel had retired the first nine Lion batters in order, including six strikeouts. That … [Read more...]
