January 29, 2018 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - COVID-19 issues dominate Chatfield School Board meetingChatfield Gophers

The last time Chatfield wrestling started the year 8-1, it was 2013-2014.  That 8-1 start became a 27-1 Class A state championship season.  It would be a bit much to expect that much from this year’s Gophers. Section 1A boasts defending Class A champion #1 Z-M (16-4), plus #3 Goodhue (13-3).  But Travis Bartels group is off to a great start.  Caledonia/Houston was the latest … [Read more...]

It was a week that ended with a tough loss. But Houston’s girls watched their top player hit a ballyhooed threshold and they beat a couple league foes to stay atop the SEC-East.  Junior Alyssa Rostad entered a match-up at Schaeffer Academy needing 17 points to hit 1,000 for her career.  With an assist from her sister Becca, the 5’5” guard nailed a three to become one of six in … [Read more...]

It can be called a rivalry by this point.  SEC-East girls foes Houston and Mabel-Canton have now gone to overtime three straight years.  Underdog M-C (3-10) led Houston (11-2) with around three minutes to go, 38-33.  The ‘Canes attacked the hoop and got to the free throw line, to build a 41-38 lead with 0:25 left.  With under ten ticks, M-C had the ball still down three, but … [Read more...]

January 22, 2018 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - Fillmore County Sports - High School Basketball

Section 1A beware (not that they aren’t anyway); R-P boys basketball is again looking like R-P boys basketball.  Tom Vix’s Trojans defended and offended their way to wins on back-to-back nights in Rushford, bringing their win tally to six in a row.  The Trojans subdued Spring Grove in a re-match of last year’s 1A East title game.  Short of down 2-0, R-P led the duration.  SG … [Read more...]
