Peter was born 17 Jan 1789 in New York. He never married. As a 25-year-old, Peter served as a private in Captain Samuel McMath’s Company of the New York Militia, enlisting on 28 Aug … [Read more...]

May 21, 2018 by Fillmore County Journal

Not only did Henry Gates’ father serve in the Revolutionary War, Henry is the only one  of our veterans whose father, Luther, was a War of 1812 soldier himself – a drum major at the age of 51! A native of Preston, Connecticut, Luther married Ann Brown in Rensselaer County, New York. In 1777, as a lad of 14, he enlisted as a drummer boy to serve three years with Captain Abler … [Read more...]

Elias Andrew Gray Lenora Cemetery

May 21, 2018 by Fillmore County Journal

Although Elias’ name was included as a genealogical inscription on the tall granite Gray family monument at Lenora Cemetery, his military service as a War of 1812 veteran entitled him to his own individual marker. Thanks to descendant Phillip Gray of El Dorado Hills, California, a freshly set marker will already be honoring Elias’ gravesite before the publication date of this … [Read more...]
