Some veteran performers and a newcomer to track and field competition had stellar starts for Caledonia/Spring Grove at the first meets of 2023. Junior Josh Beardmore won the 100-meter dash at both Stewartville on April 11 (11.48 seconds) and at the Winged Foot Invite at Plainview-Elgin-Millville on April 14 (11.07). The Warriors dominated the 100M event with sophomores Fischer Wait and Eli Staggemeyer finishing second and third at Stewartville. At P-E-M, Eli Staggemeyer was second and Owen Staggemeyer fourth.
Wait won the 400-meter dash (51.79) on Tuesday and then on Friday, with a better time (51.37), placed second among 20 runners in the 400 (51.37) while also winning the 200-meter dash (22.82). Eli Staggemeyer was third and Owen Staggemeyer fourth at 200M.
Beardmore, Staggemeyer and Staggemeyer won both the 4×100-meter and 4x200M relays at Stewartville. Sophomore Ethan Stendel joined them in the 4×100 while Wait was a member of the 4×200 team.
On Friday, senior Tysen Grinde won his first-ever triple jump competition at 38-feet, 08.5 inches. However, his track and field career had begun on Tuesday with second-place long jump (20-feet, 1-inch) and a third-place high jump (5-feet, 10-inches). And then on Friday, Grinde was second in high jump (6-02) and fourth in long jump (19-08.5).
Stendel also had success, first on Tuesday with a second-place high jump (5-10) followed on Friday by a fourth place 5-10. Stendel was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles on Tuesday (18.96) and sixth in the hurdles on Friday (17.96). He was sixth in Tuesday’s long jump (18-04) while junior Logan Tornstrom was fifth in discus at 123-feet, 8-inches.
Also earning team points (top 8 places) at Stewartville were: 4x400M relay, 8th (Mason Foellmi, Jason Schock, Lyle Myhre, Gabe Curly). The same 4×400 foursome earned sixth-place points at P-E-M. Beardmore was seventh in long jump at P-E-M.
At P-E-M, taking third place in the 4 x200M relay were Foellmi, Hunter Holland, Owen Klug and Curly. The fifth-best time was run by J.T. Hammell, Sylas Flatin, Tysen Grinde and Riley Peters.
In the team standings, the Cal/SG boys placed third among six teams on Tuesday and then third among eight squads on Friday. The Warrior girls were sixth among six teams on Tuesday and eighth among eight teams on Friday. Team titles were won by the Stewartville boys at both meets. The GMLOKS girls were the Tuesday team champions, and the host P-E-M girls won the Friday title.
For the girls at Stewartville, senior Ayshia Gay ran third at 200 meters with freshman Nicole Banse fifth and freshman Loisah Gay sixth. At 100 meters, Ayshia was sixth. Banse earned fifth-place points with long jump of 14-06.
In the 4x100M relay, the girls were third with legs run by Ayshia Gay, Banse, senior Kloe Jore and senior Charlese Walk. It was fourth place in the 4x200M relay with Loisah Gay, Jore, Walk and sophomore Sienna Augedahl.
On Friday at P-E-M, the girls were third in the 4×200 with Gay, Gay, Banse and Augedahl. They were fourth in the 4×100 with Jore, Walk, Gay and Gay. Individually, Augedahl was fourth among 15 runners in the 400M dash. Banse finished sixth in both the 200-meter dash (29.03) and long jump (14-05.5).

Lee…….please contact me about an updated top 10 list after the season is over….thank you. Also I’m volunteering as a high jump coach for GMLOKS. My grandson is running for them and wanted to try HJ. Think he mite be more suited for running, but he trys. You might see me around the HJ if you are at any meets that GMLOKS are at……take care.
