Boys Basketball (1/24 – 1/29) Three Rivers Conference

Spring Grove head boys basketball coach Wade Grinde (middle) picked up his 500th career victory in a win over Waukon. He is pictured above with former and current players (father/son) Chris and Jaxon Strinmoen. Grinde, in his 27th season at SG, has won 15 conference titles, two sub-section, and one section title in his tenure. He’s coached twelve 20-win teams and his year will be his 24th winning season out of 27.

Chatfield 69, Cotter 41 (C: D. Schindler 22 pts (5-8 threes, 7-13 FGs), 5 stls; Eli Hopp 12 pts (5-7 FGs), 5 stls; Sam Backer 11 pts (4-5 FGs), 8 rebs. Gophers hit 26 of 48 field goals (54%) but 10 of 24 free throws (42%))

St. Charles 31, #8 in A Rushford-Peterson 82, (R-P: J. Ruberg 18 pts (8-11 FGs), 8 rebs, 5 asts; Andrew Hoiness 17 pts (5-6 threes, 6-8 FGs); D. Bunke 15 pts (5-13 threes), 6 rebs; M. Bunke 9 pts (3-9 threes), 6 rebs, 4 asts. Ten Trojans scored as R-P hit 18 of 37 threes (49%), 28 of 53 field goals (53%) while also sinking 8 of 8 free throws)

Wabasha-Kellogg 55, Fillmore Central 93 (FC: J. Kiehne 19 pts, 6 rebs; Luke Hellickson 17 pts (5-11 threes), 12 rebs; Gunner Benson 17 pts (7-9 FGs, 3-5 threes); Chase Christianson 8 pts (4-5 FGs), 5 rebs; Will Parker 8 pts. WK: Parker Springer 22 pts. Falcons went 14 of 33 (42%) from deep one night after going 8 of 45 (18%). They scored 58 second half points)

St. Charles 38, Chatfield 81 (C: D. Schindler 26 pts (11-14 FGs, 4-6 threes); Drew O’Connor 15 pts (6-7 FGs), 8 rebs; Connor Jax 10 pts; Cole Johnson 6 pts, 6 rebs, 13 asts; Eli Hopp 7 pts, 7 asts. Gophers shot 33 of 54 (61%))

Fillmore Central 67, Cotter 55 (FC: J. Kiehne 33 pts (11-20 FGs, 10-16 FTs), 7 rebs; L. Hellickson 8 pts, 8 rebs; Bryce Corson 8 pts, 8 rebs, 4 asts, 5 stls. FTs: 20 of 34 (59%), C 7 of 14 (50%). FC had control at half, up 36-24. FC > 3-7, 5-11)

Southeast Conference

Schaeffer Academy 50, Grand Meadow 62 (GM: T. Glynn 27 pts; Connor Munson 10 pts; Roman Warmka 10 pts; Jace Kraft 8 pts. Larks built a 34-22 halftime edge and led most of second half by single digits)

Spring Grove 63, Kingsland 38 (SG: E. Solum 16 pts (5-6 FTs), 6 rebs; Tysen Grinde 14 pts (6-10 FGs), 7 asts, 4 stls; Carson Gerard 11 pts, 7 rebs; Jaxon Strinmoen 9 pts, 5 rebs, 5 asts, 4 stls. K: Walker Erdman 13 pts, 6 rebs; Kaleem Reiland 8 pts. It was a scant one-point Lion lead until SG seized command with a 16 to 2 run early in the second half. A later 17-point run removed all doubt. Lions hit a season-best percentage (7 of 16 > 44%) from deep. Knights were 4 of 23 (17%))

Houston 64, Glenville-Emmons 49 (H: T. Kubitz 22 pts (7-8 FTs, 7-13 FGs), 11 rebs, 5 asts, 6 stls; Morgan Rohweder 10 pts; Maddox Rodriguez 9 pts, 8 rebs, 6 stls; Carter Geiwitz 8 pts. Hurricanes hit 22 of 31 free throws (71%), post first win)

Mabel-Canton 39, Southland 77 (M-C: C. Tollefsrud 18 pts (3-10 threes, 5-6 FTs), 7 rebs)

Grand Meadow’s Connor Munson and Kingsland’s Kale Mensink go after the ball amidst the teams’ second SEC battle. GM prevailed 51-41, sweeping the series. The Larks also beat Schaeffer 62-50 to go 2-0 on the week.

Mabel-Canton 22, Spring Grove 87 (SG: T. Grinde 16 pts (3-8 threes), 5 rebs, 7 stls; J. Strinmoen 15 pts (6-6 FGs), 5 rebs; E. Solum 13 pts (3-4 threes), 6 asts; Jacob Olerud 11 pts (3-5 threes); Hunter Holland 10 pts (4-4 FGs), 4 asts. M-C: C. Tollefsrud 11 pts (3-9 threes). The Lions scored 87 points in their 87th all-time win versus the Cougars. SG hit a season-best percentage from three (13 of 24 > 54%) with a season-best 25 assists against only five turnovers. Cougars > 2-7, 6-11)

LeRoy-Ostrander 74, Southland 101 (L-O: L. Royston 23 pts (3-10 threes), 5 rebs, 6 asts; T. Olson 21 pts, 8 rebs, 5 stls; Gavin Sweeney 12 pts (6-9 FGs), 5 rebs; Chase Johnson 8 pts)

Knights led 30-27 at half, but were held to 11 second half points. FGs: GM 21 of 43 (49%), K 13 of 44 (30%). Knights hit 10 of 12 FTs. Kingsland > 3-5, 6-10)

Non-Conference

L-O’s Tanner Olson has a bead trying to block the shot of FC’s Jayce Kiehne in the teams’ non-conference game, won 70-58 by the Cardinals. Interestingly, the Cardinals lost their next two games while FC won its next two.

Cougars shot 36% from deep (8 of 22) and 46% from the field (25 of 54) while making 14 free throws. C-Tollefsrud had 38 points a game prior versus Schaeffer)

Houston 51, Wabasha-Kellogg 65 (H: T. Kubitz 15 pts, 6 rebs; M. Rodriguez 10 pts, 6 rebs; C. Geiwitz 10 pts (3-4 FGs); Connor Porter 6 pts, 6 rebs. Hurricanes > 1-6, 1-13)

Waukon 52, Spring Grove 55 (SG: E. Solum 26 pts (4-9 threes, 6-8 FTs), 6 rebs, 4 asts; T. Grinde 18 pts (10-12 FTs), 4 stls.

A Solum three-point basket with 12 seconds left, followed by a Jaxon Strinmoen steal, secured the 500th career win for SG coach Wade Grinde. There were nine lead changes and eight ties. The Lions trailed 28-24 at halftime and later by as many as eight before taking the lead with a 10-2 run. Waukon tied it just 23 seconds before Solum sank the game-winner.  FGs: W 20 of 42 (48%), SG 17 of 52 (33%). FTs: SG 16 of 23 (70%), W 5 of 6 (83%). SG had just four turnovers)
