The last full week before Christmas saw Rushford-Peterson boys in the spotlight, as they hosted rivals Spring Grove and Goodhue in notable non-conference matchups, then neighbor Chatfield in TRC action. On Monday, the Trojans (1-1 TRC, 2-1 overall) and Lions (2-0 SEC, 2-2 overall) carried on their decades long rivalry. The 2025 incarnation saw Chris Drinkall’s R-P guards control things in a convincing win. Behind four first half Cole Thompson threes, 15 total points, the Trojans led by as many as 15 in the stanza (37-22) and by nine (40-31) at intermission. The Lions got as close as seven early (49-42) in the half, but R-P then scored 19 of the next 24 points to lead 68-47. They cruised to an 89-67 win. The junior guard Thompson (21 pts, 6-13 threes) and senior guard Will LaFleur (21 pts, 5-9 threes, 4 rebs, 4 stls) led the Trojans. Cayden Lea (13 pts, 3-10 threes, 8 asts), Landon Dahl (10 pts, 5-5 FGs), Carson Johnson (7 pts, 9 rebs, 5 asts) and Brode Vickerman 7 pts, 10 rebs) made it a team effort. The best individual game was by 5’11” Lion senior guard Lyric Stadlter, who sniped his way to a 32-point, 4-assist performance. He hit 7 of 17 threes overall including four in the second half. Devon Williams added 16 points (8-10 FGs) for Dakotah Rostad’s group. Lion starter Emery Bartell went down with an ankle injury in the first half. Both teams attacked from deep liberally, RP hitting 16 of 42 threes (38%), SG 10 of 27 (37%). The Lions had 19 turnovers, R-P 12. The Trojans’ task then got tougher as they squared off with defending 1A champ Goodhue in a rematch of last year 1A title game. Both teams moved up to Class AA this year with the Wildcats (2-0 HVL, 3-0 overall) sporting the #1 ranking in state. Goodhue started the game up 10-4, making their first five field goals all without Luke Roschen on the floor. The 6’3” senior guard scored 40 in last year’s 1A title game between the two teams. He played sparingly in the first half of the rematch (coaches’ decision, two fouls). Later in the first half, R-P (1-1 TRC, 3-1 overall) used a hot spurt from deep, five straight threes, to take the lead. They went to half up 36-34. But the Trojan defense could not stop Goodhue in the second half, as the longer Wildcats shot 17 of 26 (65%) in the stanza, 30 of 52 (58%) for the game. Team Purple scored on 22 of 31 possessions in the half while R-P did so 12 of 31. R-P cooled off from deep, hitting just 4 of 17 threes (23%) after going 7 of 14 (50%) in the first half. L-Roschen scored 19 points after two in the first half. R-P was within eight at 68-60 with under six to go, but scored just three more points, as Goodhue made it more lopsided with a 12-3 run to close the game. They prevailed 80-63. Owen Roschen (26 pts, 5 rebs), L-Roschen (21 pts, 8 rebs), and Alex Loos (20 pts, 7 rebs) gave the Wildcats three guys with 20-plus points. R-P again spread it around, from Johnson (18 pts, 3-5 threes), Lea (15 pts, 3-7 threes, 4 rebs, 5 asts), LaFleur (14 pts), Thompson (9 pts, 3-10 threes), and Vickerman (6 pts, 8 rebs, 3 blks). R-P rebounded playing neighbor Chatfield. The Trojans started the game up 21-10 and later led by 13 in the half. The Gophers cut it to five at intermission (33-28) and two (35-33) early in the second half. But offensively strong R-P made 12 of their first 18 fields goals of the half including Thompson hitting three threes. They built their lead back to double digits and won by that many, 79-67. Carson Johnson (18 pts, 5-6 FGs, 8-12 FTs, 9 rebs, 5 asts) and Thompson (15 pts, 5-12 threes) led the way. Creighton Hoiness added 12 points off the bench (4-5 FGs). Dahl (10 pts, 4-6 FGs), LaFleur (9 pts), and Lea (4 pts, 1-12 FGs, 6 rebs, 7 asts) helped. Junior guard Carson Harstad had a game-high 32 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Gophers. Brooks Lea (15 pts, 7-11 FGs, 11 rebs) added a double-double while Ross Stoehr (10 pts, 9 rebs) neared one. R-P hit 8 of 23 threes (35%), Chatfield 3 of 19 (16%). The Trojans improved to 2-1 in the TRC, 4-2 overall. The Gophers are 1-2 in the TRC, 2-3 overall.
