Chatfield Gophers
Head Coach: Brian Baum.
Where We Left Off in 2022: The Gophers went 13-1 in the TRC, winning the West division title. They then went 3-2 in the playoffs, claiming the 1AA East runner-up trophy, but falling to Pine Island 9-7 in the Section 1AA play-offs. Chatfield finished a great year 20-3.
Seniors: Luke Carrier (P/OF), Carter Daniels (P/OF), Jacob Erickson (IF), Sulley Ferguson (IF), Cole Johnson (OF), Ryan Nosbisch (1B), Jackson Schild (OF), Drew Schindler (P/IF), Drew O’Connor (P/C/OF).
Juniors: Caden Boyum (P/IF), Jack Dornack (C), Nathan Allen (OF), Alec Armstrong (OF), Brayden Horsman (OF), Connor McGill (OF), Carter Schlink (IF), Kail Schott (IF), Carson Voeltz (IF).
Prognosis: The Gophers put together a 20-win season a year ago. They lost two All-TRC picks in Caden Nolte (P/1B > .447 average, eight 2B, team-high 36 RBI, 57 IP, 8-0 record, 1.60 ERA, 64 K, 18 BBs) and Connor Jax (3B/OF > .305 average, four 2B, 14 RBI, team-high 24 R). Nolte was a two-time All-league pick and 1st team Class AA All-State last season. Three All-TRC picks return in Carter Daniels (Sr. P/OF > .385 average, four 2B, two 3B, HR, 19 RBI, team-high 24 R, 46 1/3 IP, 7-1 record, 2.12 ERA, 45 K, 9 BB), Drew O’Connor (Sr. C/OF > .387 average, five HR, 19 RBI, 10 R), and Luke Carrier (Sr. P/OF > .406 average, five 2B, 9 RBI, 23 R, 30 2/3 IP, 2-1 record, four saves, 2.05 ERA). Also back are All-TRC HM picks Drew Schindler (Sr. P/IF > .317 average, 16 RBI, 18 R), Jackson Schild (Sr. OF > .340 average, 14 RBI, 18 R), and Caden Boyum (Jr. P/IF > .355 average, 9 RBI, 23 R) plus regulars Jack Dornack (Jr. C > four 2B, 7 RBI, 15 R), Ryan Nosbisch (Sr. 1B > .250 average, 7 RBI, 11 R), and Nathan Allen (12 R). Chatfield lost just the two players off last year’s team and should be potent with a talented nine-man senior class and some junior help.
Caledonia Warriors
Head Coach: Shawn Bauer (taking over for Brad Augedahl).
Where We Left Off in 2022: The Warriors went 12-3 in the TRC, taking second to La Crescent (13-2) in the East. Caledonia went 1-2 in the play-offs, losing to Chatfield 3-1 in the 1AA-East runner-up game. They finished at 13-10.
Seniors: Tristan Augedahl (P), Ayden Goetzinger (3B/P), Kyle Bechtel (SS/P), Tucker Ginther (OF), Kaleb Cavanaugh (OF), Connor Klug (1B/DH), Payton Konz (OF/DH), Simon Seymour (OF).
Juniors: Hunter Goetzinger (C), Connor Buttell (1B/OF/DH), Michael Collaran (OF), Owen Denstad (2B/OF/P), Drew Yahnke (P/1B).
Other Key Returnee: Ben Stemper (So. OF/P).
Prognosis: The Warriors competed for the TRC-East and 1AA-East titles last year, but fell a bit short after winning each in 2021. They graduated two All-TRC picks in Thane Meiners (P/SS > .312 average, seven 2B, 3B, HR, 12 RBI, 18 R, 58 1/3 IP, 7-3 record, 1.80 ERA, 78 K, 22 BB) and Brady Augedahl (P/OF > .320 average, 7 RBI, 22 R, 30 2/3 IP, 2.96 ERA). Each was twice All-TRC. Meiners was Class AA All-State last season. But the Warriors lost just three key seniors and bring back two All-TRC picks in 6’7” pitcher Tristan Augedahl (Sr. > 47 IP, 5-3 record, 1.19 ERA, 84 K, 27 BB) and Ayden Goetzinger (Sr. 3B/P > .338 average, HR, 17 RBI, 13 R, 12 IP, 12 IP, 1.75 ERA, two saves) plus All-TRC HM selection Kyle Bechtel (Sr. SS/P > .312 average, five 2B, 14 RBI, 12 R). Tucker Ginther (Sr. OF), Hunter Goetzinger (Jr. C), Drew Yahnke (Jr. 1B/P), Ben Stemper (So. OF/P), and Simon Seymour (Sr. OF) are other notable returning assets. With eight seniors, the Warriors should again be formidable. Finding supplemental pitching to go with Augedahl will be a key.
Spring Grove Lions
Head Coach: Chris Strinmoen.
Where We Left Off in 2022: The Lions went 10-4 in the SEC (third place among eight teams) and 11-8 overall. They fell to Wabasha-Kellogg, 2-0, in the 1A round of 16.
Seniors: Caleb Griffin (P/IF), Nathan Solberg (P/SS), Ty Cleven, Logan Brumm (DH).
Juniors: Jaxon Strinmoen (P/1B), Elijah Solum (CF), Braedon Solie, Caleb Ranzenberger.
Other Key Returnees: Ezra Griffin (So. C/P), Brandon Jahnke (So. 3B/P), Zach Brumm (So. LF/P), Ben Udstuen (So.), Bryce Berns (So.).
Prognosis: The Lions graduated only two key contributors and return all three All-SEC players plus an All-SEC HM, including eight of their nine pitchers and starters at six of the eight defensive positions, leaving vacancies at second base and right field. All-SEC Caleb Griffin (Sr. P/IF> .262 average, five 2B, 13 RBI, team-high 20 R, team-most 42 2/3 IP, 3-2 record, team-best 1.91 ERA, 86 K, 38 BB) returns along with All-SEC, Lion MVP Jaxon Strinmoen (Jr. P/1B > four-season team-highs .424 average, 12 RBI, 19 R, 18 sb, 18 2/3 IP, 1-1 record, 3.06 ERA, 22 K, 18 BB). Also back is All-SEC Elijah Solum (Jr. CF > .400 average, 16 RBI, 18 R, team-best 23 SB) along with All-SEC HM Ezra Griffin (So. C/P > .288 average, 15 RBI). Other returning starters are Brandon Jahnke (So. 3B/P > .276 average, team-high 19 RBI, 22 IP, 4-1 record, 3.82 ERA, 21 K, 11 BB), Zach Brumm (So. LF/P> .237 average, 6 RBI, 13 R, 12 SB), Nathan Solberg (Sr. SS/P > .256 average, 13 RBI, 14 R, 7 SB) and Logan Brumm (Sr. DH > .229 average, four 2B, 12 RBI, 12 R). With eight two-year letter winners, the Lions are loaded with quality experience, but so is most of the SEC. Third place Spring Grove and second place Southland both return three All-SEC players and an All-SEC HM while defending champion Lyle/Pacelli brings back all five All-SEC selections plus an All-SEC HM.
Fillmore Central/ Lanesboro Falcons
Head Coach: Josh Jones.
Where We Left Off in 2022: The Falcons went 3-12 in the TRC. They won their first post-season game, but fell to R-P 7-3 in the 1A-East runner-up contest. They finished 8-14.
Seniors: Bryce Corson (SS), Gunner Benson (OF/P), Cooper Ferrie (P/OF), Dillon O’Connor (C/P), Peyton Olson (3B), Stephen Schultz (1B/P), Ty Sexton (2B/P), Oliver Hoeltzle (OF).
Junior: Jacob Mandelko (OF).
Prognosis: In 2022, FC/L (8-14) improved by five wins from 2021 (3-17). The Falcons had two players honored last year. Bryce Corson (Sr. SS > .431 average, 12 RBI, team-best 23 R) made All-TRC while Cooper Ferrie (P/OF > .309 average, 16 RBI, 14 R, 40 IP, 3-5 record, 4.42 ERA) made All-TRC HM. Each return. Stephan Schultz (Sr. 1B/P > .304 average, 12 R, 17 RBI), Dillon O’Connor (Sr. C/P > .297 average, seven 2B, 15 R, 11 RBI), Ty Sexton (Sr. 2B/P > .246 average, 7 R, 13 RBI, 32 1/3 IP, 3.53 ERA), Gunner Benson (Sr. OF/P > three 2B, 10 RBI), and Peyton Olson (Sr. OF, 8 R, 5 RBI) are other returning starters. The Falcons return five pitchers who threw at least 10 innings. FCL has the pieces, including seven experience seniors, to again improve and make noise (particularly) in Section 1A.
Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland Bulldogs
Head Coach: Eric Mundfrom (taking over for Dakotah Rostad).
Where We Left Off in 2022: GMLOK went 6-8 in the SEC, 6-12 overall. They fell to Cannon Falls 7-0 in the 1AA-West quarters.
Seniors: Cole Kruegel (OF), Connor Munson (IF/P), Zac Shorter (C).
Juniors: Noah Mundfrom, Conner Tangen, Courtland Drury-DeBoer, Cameron Asher.
Prognosis: The Bulldogs won six games last year but graduated their All-SEC player in Dustin Copley (P/SS > roughly .520 average, five 2B, three 3B, two HR, 12 RBI, 20 R) and their All-SEC HM guy in Nick Fetterly (P/2B > roughly .320 average, 6 RBI, 12 R). Copley was thrice All-SEC. The duo were the most used Bulldog pitchers. All told, six often used players graduated. The Bulldogs top returnees are Cole Kruegel (Sr. OF > rough .250 average, 5 RBI, 10 R), Zac Shorter (Sr. C), Connor Munson (.304 average in eight games), Noah Mundfrom (.421 average, 4 RBI, 6 R in nine games), and Connor Tangen (.333 average in eight games). Munson was a key performer in 2021 (.296 average, 12 RBI, 11 R, 12 1/3 IP) before missing parts of last year to injury. Tangen (13 1/3 IP) and Munson (6 IP) are the two most experienced pitchers. GMLOK is young with just seven total upperclassmen and eight sophomores. Retooling would be one word to describe their upcoming season. All 2022 Bulldog stats (above) are short one game.
Mabel-Canton Cougars
Head Coach: Paul Tollefsrud (new taking over for Karl Urbaniak).
Where We Left Off in 2022: The Cougars went 4-10 in the SEC and 5-14 overall. They fell to United South Central 9-1 in the 1A Round of 16.
Seniors: Fred Williams, Jordan Larson, JaColbey Torgerson
Juniors: Cayden Tollefsrud (P/C/IF), Triston Hunsaker, Hayden Erickson, Riley Snell, Jaden Torgerson.
Other Key Returnees: Tyler Larson (So. IF), Isaac Underbakke (Fr. IF/P).
Prognosis: The Cougars graduated four relied upon seniors from last year but return their All-SEC pick in Cayden Tollefsrud (Jr. P/C/IF > team-best .426 average, four 2B, 9 RBI, 20 R, 38 IP, 1-6 record, 2.63 ERA, 52 K, 27 BB) and All-SEC HM pick in Isaac Underbakke (Fr. SS/P > 13 RBI, 10 R, 19 1/3 IP, 3.88 ERA). They were two of M-C’s top three pitchers. Tyler Larson (So. 3B > .309 average, 14 RBI, 10 R), Fred Williams (Sr. > 277 average, 8 R), Hayden Erickson (Jr. > .275 average, three 2B, 6 RBI, 8 R), and Jordan Larson (Sr. > 9 RBI, 12 R, 12 IP) give the Cougars six returning starters. With nine upperclassmen, M-C’s numbers are not too bad as they try to improve upon a five-win season.
Rushford-Peterson Trojans
Head Coach: Blake Lea (new taking over for Jordan Aug).
Where We Left Off in 2022: The Trojans went 5-8-1 in the TRC, but played five post-season games. They made Austin, falling to Southland 2-1 in the 1A final six. They finished at 11-12-1.
Senior: Riley Tesch (OF/SS).
Juniors: Evan Kammerer (C/2B), Evan Skalet (OF/1B), Rylan Schneider (P/OF/1B), Beau Grindland (OF), Shane Rask (2B/OF).
Other Key Returnees: Jonah Bunke (So. IF), Caden Johnson (So. 3B/OF).
Prognosis: The Trojans made a nice post-season run last year, but did so, led by seniors. R-P graduated a trio of All-TRC picks in Justin Ruberg (P/SS > .279 average, six 2B, 10 RBI, 16 R, 67 2/3 IP, 6-3 record, 2.59 ERA, 83 K, 20 BB), Malachi Bunke (.243 average, team-high 22 R, 9 RBI, 28 IP, 3-1 record), and Alex Ronnenberg (.246 average, six 2B, three 3B, HR, team-high 22 R, 15 RBI, 26 1/3 IP) plus All-TRC HM pick Tommy Ekern (six 2B, HR, team-high 16 RBI, 7 R). All told, five starters graduated plus a sixth is not out (Andrew Wilkemeyer). The Trojans return two every-game guys in Riley Tesch (Sr. OF/SS > 14 RBI, 17 R) and Jonah Bunke (So. IF > 15 R) and two most-of-the time guys in Rylan Schneider (Jr. P/OF/1B > .244, average, 8 RBI) and Caden Johnson. Schneider (15 IP) and Tesch (8 2/3 IP) are the most experienced returning pitchers. It will be a good-sized overhaul for the one-senior Trojans.
Houston Hurricanes
Head Coach: Jason Carrier.
Where We Left Off in 2022: The Hurricanes, coming off an 0-21 season in 2021, notched a few wins last year. They went 4-10 in the SEC and 5-14 overall, falling to Kenyon-Wanamingo 9-1 in the 1A Round of 16.
Seniors: Conner Porter (P/1B), Ezequiel Heins, Macormic Sheck, Lawrence Traun.
Juniors: Alex Walters (2B), Arik Melbo (OF/3B/P), Jordan Beemon.
Other Key Returnees: Zach Olson (So. OF), Morgan Rohweder (So. P/SS), Maddox Rodriguez (So. C/OF), Austin Swenson (So. OF/P), Logan Olson, Tristan Stinson (P).
Prognosis: The Hurricanes had just one senior last year. They return their All-SEC pick in Maddox Rodriguez (So. C/OF > team-best .318 average, 10 RBI, 11 R) and their All-SEC HM selection in Zach Olson (So. OF > .316 average, 7 RBI, 13 R). Also back are Austin Swenson (So. OF/P > .279 average, 16 RBI, 16 R), Logan Olson (So. > .277 average, 6 RBI), Conner Porter (Sr. OF/3B /P > team-high 34 1/3 IP, 3.67 ERA, 47 K, 16 BB, 8 RBI, 7 R), Arik Melbo (Jr. OF/3B/P > 16 R, 17 2/3 IP, 21 K, 11 BB, 3.56 ERA), and Morgan Rohweder (So. P/SS > 5 RBI, 8 R, 18 1/3 IP. They give the Hurricanes eight who had at least 50 plate appearances a year ago. Tristan Stinson (So. P > 22 1/3 IP) joins with Porter, Melbo, and Rohweder as the Hurricanes most used pitchers from last year. The Hurricanes return as much as anybody of the “Journal 11” schools, but are still young (sophomore-laden) and improving.
Golf Preview Capsules Fillmore Central Falcons
Head Coaches: Aaron Mensink (girls), Brad Holten (boys).
Where We Left Off in 2022: The Falcons girls won their eighth straight 1A title and competed at state for an eighth consecutive time, taking fourth place. They also won the TRC-East (6-0, 8-0) and were TRC meet champions. Six Falcons finished top seven at the 1A meet led by medalist Courtney Hershberger, runner-up Chloe Morem, and third-place Myleigh Scheevel. Hershberger finished an esteemed third place at state. The boys (4-4, 4-6) finished second at the TRC meet and made Day Two of the 1A tourney, taking fourth. Jake Fishbaugher was TRC Meet and 1A meet champion. He tied for 8th at state, also an esteemed position.
Prognosis: FC boasts the unique distinction of returning a top 10 state finisher for both the girls (Courtney Hershberger) and boys (Jake Fishbaugher). The Falcon girls will again be the 1A favorite, as five of six state competitors from last return led by senior Hershberger (TRC third place, 1A champion, state third place), senior Chloe Morem (TRC runner-up, 1A runner-up), sophomore Myleigh Scheevel (TRC 7th place-tie, 1A third place, state 47th place), junior Aubrey Larson (TRC 7th-tie, 1A 5th place, state 45th-place tie) plus sophomore Annika Mensink (TRC 11th place, 1A sixth place). Marissa Topness (TRC 4th place, 1A 7th place, state 41st place-tie) was the only graduation. Hershberger, Morem, Scheevel, and Larson were each All-TRC last year. Sophomore Lily Miller (from 2021) gives FC six girls with state experience. FC is as veteran and as loaded as it has been in a couple years. On the guys side, three-time state-entrant, senior Jake Fishbaugher (TRC champion, 1A champion, state 8th place-tie) sets his eyes on a state title. He has already signed to play golf in college. Luke Hellickson (junior), Aiden Arnold (sophomore), Anthony Kiehne (sophomore), and Tyler Mayer (junior) give FC five notable returnees. Arnold took 11th at the 1A meet. Fishbaugher and Hellickson were All-TRC.
Chatfield Gophers
Head Coach: Paul Wagner.
Where We Left Off in 2022: The Gophers boys took second in the TRC-West (6-2, 6-2) to Dover-Eyota while the girls did not field a complete team. The boys took fifth at the TRC Meet and finished in the bottom third of the 1AA meet. Carson Harstad was their top golfer as a 7th grader (TRC 7th place-tie, 1AA 15th place-tie). Colton Johnson (12th place-tie) also finished top 20 at the TRC Meet. On the girls side, Taylor Ask (14th place) and Mya Henry (16th place-tie) finished top 20 at the TRC Meet.
Prognosis: Last year’s Gopher guys contended for the TRC-West crown. Chatfield returns its top two golfers in 8th grader Carson Harstad (TRC 7th-place tie, 1AA 15th place-tie) and junior Colton Johnson (TRC 12th place-tie). Senior Braxton McCaslin and junior Gage Bartels also return, as the Gophers graduated two of their six from last year. Harstad, Johnson, and McCaslin are returning All-TRC picks. West contention is again on the table. On the girls side, the top two golfers return in junior Taylor Ask (TRC 14th place) and sophomore Mya Henry (TRC 16th place-tie). Each was All-TRC last year. Freshman Grace Copeman is a third notable returnee. The girls have five out, so they should field a complete team.
Caledonia Warriors
Head Coach: Robbie Sobczak (girls), Scott Sorenson (boys).
Where We Left Off in 2022: The Warriors girls had a solid year in the TRC (4-3, 5-3). They were TRC Meet runner-up to FC and made Day 2 of 1AA sections, finishing fifth (of 12). Libby Jilek (5th place), Miranda Schroeder (6th place), Lexie Hoscheit (12th-place tie), and Elly Milde (18th place) all finished top 20 at the TRC Meet. Schroeder (16th place) and Milde (17th place) finished top 20 at the 1AA meet. The boys were below five-hundred on the year (2-7, 2-7). Evan Hawkins (17th place) finished top 20 at the TRC meet.
Prognosis: The girls had a good year last season, notably making Day 2 of the tough 1AA tourney. They return key pieces seniors Miranda Schroeder (TRC 6th place, 1AA 16th place), Elly Milde (TRC 18th place, 1AA 18th place), and Lexie Hoscheit (TRC 12th place-tie). Would-be key returnee Libby Jilek is not out. Schroeder and Hoscheit are returning All-TRC picks. Freshman Maggie Herman and 8th grader Hayden Harms are two other notable returnees. On the guys side, All-TRC pick senior Evan Hawkins (TRC 17th place) is the top returnee. Seniors Riley Aasum and Isaac Housker and junior Vincent Colsch give the Warriors four notable returnees from last year.
Lanesboro Burros
Head Coach: Krissy Overland.
Where We Left Off in 2022: The Burro boys tri-shared the SEC regular season team title (8-2, 8-3) with Kingsland and Southland. They won the SEC Meet and were 1A runner-up behind R-P. Kaden Stettler (SEC 4th place, 1A 14th place-tie), Jack Brogle (SEC 5th place, 1A 12th place-tie), Clay Schwichtenberg (SEC 7th place, 1A 4th place), Reece Benson (SEC 9th place), and Dayton Haugen (SEC 11th place, 1A 14th place-tie) were high post-season meet placers. Schwichtenberg qualified for state. The Burros girls were SEC regulars season (7-0, 7-1) and post-season champs. They did not make the Day 2 cut for the 1A meet. Chloe Schnebly was SEC Meet champion. She also took 11th at sections, qualifying for state. Ariana Huntington (SEC third place, 1A 14th place) and Jessie Schreiber (SEC 4th place, 1A 15th place) also had high post-season finishes.
Prognosis: The boys again looked primed for state contention, as they return three strong golfers in junior Kaden Stettler (SEC 4th place, 1A 14th place-tie), 8th grader Jack Brogle (SEC 5th place, 1A 12th place), and sophomore Dayton Haugen (SEC 11th place, 1A 14th place-tie). Stettler and Brogle are returning All-SEC picks. Sophomore Holdyn Willford is a fourth key returnee. Senior Hayden Lawstuen returns after missing last year to injury. He was SEC runner-up and took seventh at the 1A Meet in 2021 when the Burros made state as a team. On the girls side, senior Chloe Schnebly (SEC champion, 1A 11th place) returns after qualifying for state last year. Seniors Ariana Huntington (SEC 3rd place, 1A 14th place) and Jessie Schreiber (SEC 4th place, 1A 15th place) give the Burros a strong returning threesome. All three were All-SEC last year. Sophomore Taylor Hanson also returns.
GMLO Bulldogs
Head Coach: Craig Knight.
Where We Left Off in 2022: The GMLO boys had a full team, but finished below five-hundred (2-8, 2-8) while the girls were incomplete. The boys took fifth (of six) at the SEC Meet and did not make Day 2 of sections. Taylor Glynn was the SEC Meet medalist though and he took 10th at the 1A Meet (just missing state). GMLO gal golfers Lacy Frederickson (7th place) and Gabby Tangren (8th place) each finished top 10 at the SEC Meet. Tangren was top 20 (16th place-tie) at the 1A Meet.
Prognosis: The Bulldogs boys lost their top golfer in All-SEC pick Taylor Glynn, and return just two key guys off last year’s 1A Meet team in junior Aaron Mork and sophomore Nathan Fretty. The boys have 10 guys out. The girls return All-SEC picks, 8th graders Gabby Tangren (SEC 8th place, 1A 16th place-tie) and Lacy Frederickson (SEC 7th place). They are the only two girls out.
Kingsland Knights
Head Coach: Paul Eckheart.
Where We Left Off in 2022: The Knight boys were part of a three-way share of the SEC title last year (unofficially going 8-2) with Southland and Lanesboro. They took third at the SEC Meet and made Day 2 of the 1A meet, finishing sixth. Nick Eickhoff (SEC third place, 1A 9th place), Kaden Rath (SEC 12th place, 1A 7th place), Nathan O’Connell (SEC 17th place-tie), and Ethan Carr (SEC 17 place-tie) posted high post-season finishes. Eickhoff and Rath just missed the state cut. The Knights did not have a girl compete at the 1A Meet, but Emily Sargent (SEC Meet 8th place) finished top 10 at the SEC meet.
Prognosis: Kingsland graduated three key guys from last year in All-SEC pick Nick Eickhoff (SEC third place, 1A 9th place), Kaden Rath (SEC 12th place, 1A 7th place), and Nathan O’Connell (SEC 17th place-tie). They return two key guys in junior Ethan Carr (SEC 17th place-tie) and sophomore Gavin Hubka. The girls do not return any post-season competitors but have a three-girl team. Kingsland has no returning All-SEC picks.
Rushford-Peterson Trojans
Head Coach: Luke Rye.
Where We Left Off in 2022: The Trojans boys (6-2, 9-2) took second to La Crescent/Hokah in the TRC East. R-P then took third at the TRC Meet but won the 1A meet, qualifying for state. Andrew Hoiness (TRC runner-up, 1A third place), Carson Thompson (TRC 12th place-tie, 1A 12th place-tie), Grady Hengel (TRC 11th place, 1A 7th place-tie), and Ethan Bedard (1A 19th place-tie) had high finishes at the post-season meets. The Trojans then took eighth at state with Hoiness (37th place) the highest finisher. The girls did not field a team last year.
Prognosis: R-P’s boys are the defending 1A champions, but will essentially start from scratch, as two seniors graduated (Hoiness, Thompson), two would-be returning seniors (Grady Hengel, Owen Fenske) switched over to track and field, and the Trojans’ other two state golfers did not participate this year. Hoiness, Thompson, and Hengel were R-P’s All-TRC picks last year. The boys do have 16 golfers out. The girls will field a team this year, as they four gals out.
Houston Hurricanes
Head Coaches: Ryan Gatzlaff (girls), Kiel Koehler (boys).
Where We Left Off in 2022: Houston’s boys finished sub-five-hundred (2-8, 2-9) while the girls did not field a full team consistently. The boys took sixth (of six) at the SEC Meet. Neither team made Day 2 of sections. Ethan Knutson (8th place) finished top 10 at the SEC meet for the guys. Hannah Weichert (5th place) finished top 10 at the SEC meet for the girls.
Prognosis: The Hurricanes return their top boy and girls golfers. Junior Ethan Knutson (SEC 8th place), an All-SEC pick, leads the guys, which also have notable returnees junior Preston Peterson, sophomores John Traun and Seth Erdmann. The boys have 10 out. The girls return All-SEC picks, senior Hannah Weichert (SEC 5th place) and sophomore Lexi Weichert, plus sophomore Emily Weichert. The girls have a four-person team.
