Home Run Results in Lion-Trojan, Baseball-Softball Split
With Spring Grove trailing by two runs, with two outs and two runners aboard, Tysen Moen powered a Rushford-Peterson pitch over the left field fence, producing the Lions’ first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Winning pitcher Kolton Nerstad, in brief relief (four batters, two strikeouts), retired the visiting Trojans, in order, to wrap up the 5-4 decision with Lions leaping in celebration. All five SG runs were scored after two outs. Moen batted 2 for 3 as did Brandon Jahnke, each with a hit during that game-changing rally. For R-P, Caden Johnson also went 2 for 3, including a lead-off double that ignited a three-run eruption for a 3-0 third-inning R-P lead. The Trojans’ only error helped the Lions reply with two unearned runs in the next inning. The Lions’ only error helped R-P add an unearned run in the sixth for a 4-2 Trojan lead. Two outs later, a single, a hit batter and Moen’s round-tripper finally put Spring Grove ahead. Both teams had seven hits. Both starting pitchers performed well, but with the pitch count, neither was the pitcher of record. Lion Ezra Griffin (5 2/3 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER) struck out 12, walked four. Trojan Elias Johnson (5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER) fanned four, walked only two with no earned runs. Jonah Bunke (1 IP) absorbed the pitching loss, but drove in two runs batting (1-3, R). SG’s Christian Bjerke (1-3) also had two RBIs. SG is 2-2 in the SEC, 3-3 overall. R-P is 1-1 in the TRC, 1-2 overall. At softball, each team had six hits. But the Trojans with a pair of four-run frames (first inning, sixth inning), never relinquished the lead, winning 11-3. Contrarily, SG could not put runs together with all three tallies coming in different innings. Three Lion innings began with a base hit, but only once did SG convert a strong start into a score. Three of the four Lion errors contributed to Trojan scores. However, SG did not score even when both R-P errors occurred in the same inning. R-P received triples from both Lillian West (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 R) and Lindsey Hoiness (1-3, RBI, R) while Ariana Bettinger (1-4) produced an RBI and two runs. SG’s Jada Strinmoen batted 2 for 4 with two doubles (and an RBI) while Emerson Ingvalson (1-3) belted a triple. But only one of those big hits resulted in a run. Winning pitcher Shelby Tesch (7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER) recorded 10 strikeouts, while issuing seven free passes. She also scored thrice offensively. SG seventh grader Claire Sherburne (5 IP, 4 H, 9 R, 5 ER) struck out six, walked eight, and reliever Brinley Middendorf (2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER) fanned one, walked none. RP is 0-1 in the TRC, 1-1 overall. SG is 2-2 in the SEC, 2-3 overall.
Houston’s Scoreless Innings Streak Ends in 30-Run Game
Houston baseball had an interesting week. The Hurricanes started with back-to-back five-inning wins over Schaeffer Academy 13-0 and Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons 10-0. The two wins brought Houston’s record to 4-0 and each of the games was a shutout. The Hurricanes thus played 24 innings to start the season without yielding a run. Versus the Lions, Grayden Beckman (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K, 1-2, RBI, R), Hector Steinfeldt (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K), and C.J. Wruck (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1-3, RBI) combined for a five-inning no-hitter. Zach Olson (3-4, RBI, 2 R), Dawson Pedretti (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R), Morgan Rohweder (2-4, RBI, 2 R), and Ryan Riederer (2-3, RBI, R) each had multiple hits. Isaac Brand (1-2, RBI, R) helped. Versus AC/G-E, Rohweder pitched a five-inning no-hitter (2 BB, 13 K) while going 2-for-3 (2B, 2 RBI, 2 R). He improved to 3-0 on the mound (16 IP, 5 H, 36 Ks, 0.00 ERA). Olson (1-3, 2 RBI, R), Steinfeldt (2-4, RBI, 2 R), and Coltin Groth (1-2, 2 RBI, 2 R) also hit the ball. Houston’s scoreless innings streak then ended spectacularly. At Medford, the Tigers prevailed 16-14! The Hurricanes had an eight-run second and led 8-4 thru five innings before giving up an 11-run sixth. Medford’s first 10 batters reached in the inning (on just three hits). Houston then trailed 16-8 only to score six runs in the top of the seventh. They had the tying run on first but a strikeout ended the contest. Rohweder (4-5, 3 RBI, 3 R), Pedretti (3-5, 2 RBI, 2 R), Olson (2-5, 2 RBI, 2 R), Steinfeldt (2-4, 2B, RBI, R), and Riederer (2-3, RBI, 2 R) each had multiple hits. Wruck (1-3, 2 R), Brand (1-1, R), and Beckman (1-4, R) each drove in a run. Steinfeldt (4 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 8 K) was the starter and left game with Houston leading 8-5. Jason Carrier’s squad (4-0, 4-1) leads Southland (3-0, 3-2) atop the SEC.
