While it rained during the B-team football finale in Spring Grove, there was no lightning from the sky. But there were four lightning-quick touchdowns that brought Lanesboro from behind to stun Spring Grove, 30-6. Both B-teams had four turnovers, but Lanesboro converted two interceptions into touchdowns. The Lions led 6-0 at halftime before the Burros dominated the second half.
Number 28 had the ball for much of the evening. Wearing jersey number 28 for the Burros, sophomore Boston Wright rampaged for 227 yards, two touchdowns and two 2-point conversions. Wearing 28 for Spring Grove, freshman Zach Brumm rushed for 201 yards on 25 carries (8-yard average), including a 75-yard touchdown burst late in the first quarter. Just before halftime, the Lions’ 14-play, 67-yard drive ended on downs after reaching the Lanesboro 5 yard-line. The score remained 6-0 at the break. The Spring Grove defense had blanked Lanesboro in the first half with an interception by Brumm and a fumble forced by Gavin Ostern and recovered by Brumm.
In the second half, the Lions twice went three-plays-and-punt, twice lost fumbles and twice saw interceptions returned for long-distance touchdowns. The 70-yard return by Parker Storhoff and the 80-yard pick-six by Luke Ruen were two of Lanesboro’s four lightning-quick touchdowns. Wright had bolted 59 yards to the end zone just three plays into the third quarter. Kaden Stettler passed to Peyton Olson for the extra points and, the Burros led 8-6. In between the two interception touchdowns, there was a one-play possession with Wright racing 70 yards to paydirt.
It had still been 8-6 when Lanesboro lost another fumble – forced by Brandon Jahnke and recovered by Jacob Olerud. But it was already 30-6 before Troy Reinhardt picked of another Burro pass. Both of those turnovers were followed by the Lions giving – or the Burros taking – the ball back.
Lanesboro attempted only four passes with only one reception for 10 yards. Lion defenders got their hands on the other three – intercepting two (Brumm and Reinhardt) and Bryce Berns breaking up the other. But Wright took 21 handoffs and broke three long runs, two crossing the goal line. Emmett Engeldinger led Lion tacklers with 10 stops while Ostern and Olerud were each credited with seven tackles.
One-loss Lanesboro handed the Spring Grove B-boys (2-1) their first and only loss of the brief B-team football season that saw the first three games canceled. It was the Lions’ only home appearance at Blayne Onsgard Field after two road wins. Over the last two seasons, it was the Lions’ third straight loss against Lanesboro.
