With a blizzard on the horizon, girls 1A quarterfinal contests represented the calm before the storm. Four senior-driven teams moved on to what should be a highly competitive 1A East final four. One Journal-covered team is guaranteed a spot in the section title game. Four Journal teams are in the semis. Top seed R-P (18-6) scored 52 first half points versus 9-seed W-K … [Read more...]
Mandt, Tekautz, and Thomas Grapple to State
They were one day warriors. A blizzard turned the Section 1 individual wrestling meets into a 12-hour Saturday affair. Chatfield, LARP, and FCLMC each had a guy qualify for state. Six county guys finished third. A bunch of seniors concluded excellent careers. A junior continued his prominence. Chatfield’s Jake Mandt (bye, pin, 20-9 MD) made the … [Read more...]

Fillmore County Journal Athlete of the Week ~ Brianna Koop
Cold Water, 2,000, and #1
It was another big week of R-P girls basketball. On Monday, Brianna Koop fouled like she normally scores (often), so Savannah Skalet dissipated Houston’s spin. Dale Moga’s ‘Canes had a chance with Koop mostly on the bench. The game was tied at halftime. Houston trailed 36-34 with 10:00 left. R-P then went on a 10-run (46-34). Eight came as second-chance-points. Skalet (6) … [Read more...]
East Champs M-C…Go to OT
They aren’t big, nor upperclassmen-laden. M-C girls basketball play bigger than they are, with discipline, and they have senior stand-out Coranda Vickerman. Adam Wilder’s girls beat Schaeffer Academy 57-52 to clinch the SEC-East division. Vickerman (24 pts, 9-16 FGs, 5-6 FTs, 10 rebs) led the way, as she’s done for three years now. M-C’s other senior, Courtney Graves, added 16 … [Read more...]
Knights Castle Besieged by Gophers
It’s been a pretty solid year for Kingsland basketball. Girls (15-9) and boys (13-9) teams could both finish above five-hundred. Chatfield’s squads (boys 5-15, girls 3-20) won’t. But for one night, they besieged Kingsland with a couple upsets. The Gopher boys hit their first seven, 16 of their first 19, and 22 of 30 first half field goals (10-15 threes) for a 54-33 halftime … [Read more...]
