Fighting Out of a Hole

December 24, 2018 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - Houston Hurricanes

It was an inauspicious start to the season for Houston girls basketball.  Two long road trips and a night-game, day-game, back-to-back, equaled and 0-3 start for last year’s SEC East champs.  The ‘Canes were happy to be home hosting Kingsland.  Inspired, they got win number one 60-48.  Free throws were a difference, as the ‘Canes went 20 of 27 to Kingsland’s 15 of 30.  Each … [Read more...]

Triple-Double to 1,000

December 24, 2018 by Paul Trende

The 1,000-point threshold in high school basketball is a touted accomplishment.  Those who get there are typically naturally blessed.  They work hard to improve.  In today’s small schools, kids have ample time on varsity to ascend to the mark, as they sometimes play as early as freshman or even eighth grade.  Mabel-Canton junior Payton Danielson played a lot as a seventh grader … [Read more...]

Kings of Three for a Half

December 24, 2018 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - Kingsland Knights - Spring Valley

In recent memory, Kingsland boys basketball has developed a reputation for shooting the three.  The Knights are streaky as hell.  When hot, they scorch.  Versus Lanesboro, they put on a show which rivalled their famous 2015 1A semifinal with Spring Grove.  After an early miss, they hit threes on five straight possessions and nine straight to end the first half!  The Burros were … [Read more...]

2018-2019 Wrestling Preview

December 17, 2018 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - Fillmore County Sports - High School Sports - Wrestling

The 2017-2018 season produced at least one state entrant for each of the county’s wrestling programs.  Three of the four guys to make St. Paul made the podium.  There was a very good program (Chatfield), a solid middle-of-the-road group (LARP), and team short on numbers (FCLMC).  Chatfield and LARP didn’t lose too much.  They’ll look to improve on their individual team seasons … [Read more...]

Hot Shots

December 17, 2018 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - Fillmore County Sports

LARP’s Dominic Jenkins was the stand-out wrestler of the week, grappling out five wins in five matches for a LARP squad that went 3-2.  Monday thru Friday, county b-ball teams went 3-18 (yikes).  A 4-3 Saturday at the Decorah Border Battle was better.  Houston’s Mikkel Schutte did his best to fill teammate James Hongerholt’s void (broken hand).  Over three games, a pair of big … [Read more...]

December 10, 2018 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - High School Football

With area teams Spring Grove and Caledonia winning state titles, 2018 All-District football lists come out well after most teams are done playing.  In the Southeast-White, Section 1AA Runner-Up Chatfield gets six All-District players (five seniors, one junior); two-way stand-outs who helped the Gophers to a strong 8-3 season.  Heading the cast is Gage Tuohy (5’11” 195 RB/S).  … [Read more...]
