August Charles Serio, age 88, of Preston, Minn., died February 15, 2024. at his home.
“Gus,” as everyone knew him, was a fun, loving person to all who knew him. He was born in Melrose Park, Ill., on October 23, 1935, to Sam and Anna (Lapagilla) Serio. Even as a child he was known as a hardworking kid. After meeting the love of his life, Arlene Kaminski, he knew that he would spend life and eternity with her. Together they had three boys: Gus, Chris and Andrew. As time passed he was a restless soul and wanted to try his hand at farming. He started milking cows near Winona, Minn.; he loved the freedom, but again had to go back to working three jobs to support his family. His youngest son would help to complete the work on the farm. As time passed Gus moved to a quaint town, Preston, Minn. On a small 10 acre farm he enjoyed and loved helping his youngest son with their greenhouse, growing hydroponic tomatoes and lettuce which they sold at the Rochester Farmers Market. He enjoyed cutting grass and doing deliveries; sales of the products was his joy along with the chickens that ran all over the yard. He also had a great love for dogs, especially Taffy. Gus had a love for music and would often seek out polka bands; his favorite was the Jim Busta Band. When he found time, he also enjoyed fishing, but being knowledgeable and keeping up on family affairs always came first. One of his greatest enjoyments was a two-week trip he took to Italy in 2017, which he often spoke of.
Gus is survived by one brother, Michael; three sons: Gus (Teresa), Chris (Becky) and Andrew (Jenny); five grandchildren: Joe (Dior), Diana (James), Catherine (Kurtis), Gianna (Nick) and Kaelyn; one great-grandchild, Louis August; and two great-grandchildren on the way.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life for over 50 years, Arlene; two sisters, Rosemary and Antoinette; and his parents.
