“My momma didn’t raise no spendthrift.” She loved sales, particularly with 80% off. She shopped garage sales and often picked up the entire free box. We had few books in our home, but after I learned to read, I discoveredthe public library. Almost everything was free. There was one rack that was a rental usually preventing young children who didn’t have a quarter from reading rather adult books. I wanted to read a book called “The 27th Wife” so I saved my babysitting money and went to rent it. No go. I had to have a signed note from my mother to rent that book. I guess the librarian decided a nice young girl like myself didn’t need to read about polygamy. I usually read Pollyanna books and all the Nancy Drew mysteries.
In 7th grade our English teacher asked us if we had read any animal books over the summer. I replied, “Moby Dick.” He appeared surprised so I explained it was about a whale. He dryly said he knew that.
In Minnesota we have the wonderful SELCO option so I can order books from all over Minnesota. They are all FREE! Librarian Liz is soooooooooooooo smart, as is herassistant Beth. They are invaluable and worth their weight in gold, even if they are both thin.
Libraries were started by Andrew Carnegie because he felt guilty about the Johnstown Flood. Read the book and find out why.
