Phyllis Schimming (Remke) of Whitewater, Wisconsin, passed away at her home on the morning of October 3, 2026.
Phyllis was born in 1936 to Raymond and Vivian Remke in Decorah, Iowa. Upon her graduation from Decorah High School, Phyllis married John G. Schimming and began her adventures as a Navy Spouse. It is said Phyllis had four lives: growing up in Decorah, being a Navy spouse for 20 years, then buying a hobby farm in Canton, Minnesota, with her husband where they lived for 28 years, enjoying gardening and running the grandkids around on the four-wheeler. Also during her time in Canton, Phyllis was a very supportive member of Assumption Catholic Church. Upon her husband’s death, Phyllis moved to McHenry, Illinois, to begin life number four to be closer to her son Michael. She spent 23 years in McHenry prior to moving to Whitewater near her youngest son John and his family.
Phyllis is survived by her son John and his wife Dena (Schneeberger), Daughter-in-Law Linda Schimming (Bollweg), Granddaughters Emily (Mike Mulcrone), Allison (Zach Skibinski), Mackenzie and Cora, grandsons Mark (Leanne Whiting) and Gable, great-grandson Mick, and her nephew Ray Joe Johnson (Renee Boland) of Decorah.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Dale and Dean, her sister Darlene, Husband John G. and her son Michael.
From Phyllis’s granddaughter: “You will be remembered for your kindness, stubbornness, strength, humor and being a strong, independent woman.Your love of cards, birds, the color purple, coloring, flowers, scary movies, and your cute little tea cups. Your stories are already missed, your comforting hugs, your laugh and most of all: you.
“You are an amazing Grandma and everyone who got to know you cherished your kindness and laughter. We love you Grandma Philly!”
Visitation will take place at 10 with Funeral Services at 11 on October 16 at Assumption Catholic Church, Canton Minnesota. There will be a burial service after at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
