Volleyball action on the week centered around Lanesboro. The Burros played at Houston, then hosted Kingsland and Mabel-Canton. The match in Houston was the best of the three. The teams split the opening two sets. Lanesboro won game one 25-13 and Houston took game two 25-18. Bella Rodriguez notably served 10 straight points in the set to put the Hurricanes ahead 21-9. Game three saw Houston lead 21-12 but the Burros rallied behind six straight service points from Kaylee Gilbertson, which pulled Lanesboro to down 21-19. The match was then tied at 23, 24, 25, and 26. Lanesboro staved off three set points (24-23, 25-24, and 26-25) but not a fourth. A Natalie Skifton kill lifted Houston to the 28-26 win, the 2-1 lead. Houston then again was out decently in game four (10-5) only for the game to be tied as late as 15-15. But Lanesboro ended on a 10-2 run to take the set 25-17, sending the match to five games. Said set had ties at 1, 5, 7, 8, and 12. Gilbertson had six kills plus an ace in the set, but Lanesboro gave up an 11-8 lead. Houston’s seven points in a 7-1 game-clinching run came via three errors and four scored points. Mary Srock served an ace to make it 14-12 Hurricanes and Emmie Melbo finished it with a kill, as Houston prevailed 3-2 (13-25, 25-18, 28-26, 17-25, 15-12). The Hurricanes also won a match versus the Burro 3-2 last season. Rodriguez (27 digs, 4 assists, 3 aces) led the Hurricane defensive effort. Melbo (7 kills, 9 digs) and Stella Keehner (4 kills, 16 assists, 7 digs) were also big. Caidence Frauenkron (6 kills, 4 ace blocks), Skifton (6 kills), Srock (10 digs), Lydia Pedretti (4 kills, 5 digs), and Claire Frauenkron (3 kills, 5 digs, 4 ace blocks) helped. Burros senior Jentrey Schreiber had a massive 29 kills plus 14 digs, Emma Ruen had 50 assists and 13 digs, Gilbertson 18 kills, 11 digs, and 3 aces. Cora Mayer (7 kills, 5 aces, 5 total blocks), Prailey Willford (11 digs, 5 assists), and Irelynn Papenfuss (10 digs, 3 aces) helped. The Hurricanes improved to 1-1 in the SEC and overall. The Burros then hosted Kingsland a night later and swept the Knights 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-21). Ruen (25 assists, 10 digs) and Schreiber (13 kills, 8 digs) led the way. Gilbertson (5 kills, 13 digs), Papenfuss (8 digs), Jewels Lidke (5 kills), and Mayer (4 kills, 4 digs) helped. Kingsland was led by Chloe Drury-DeBoer (22 digs). Jill Moore (4 kills, 9 digs), Kinley Merkel (12 digs), and Sydney Wendt (11 assists, 7 digs) helped. The Knights are 0-1 in the SEC/overall. Mabel-Canton, ranked #9 in Class A, then came to town. The hitting duo of Ella Halverson (19 kills) and Braylee Stortz (15 kills, 7 digs, 13-15 serving, 6 aces), set by Gwen Rein (38 assists), was too much for the Burros, as the Cougars won 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-17). Livia Garness (10 digs, 20-21 serving, 6 aces) and Lauren Burke (11 digs) helped the M-C cause. Ruen (15 assists, 8 digs), Schreiber (13 kills, 6 digs), Gilbertson (8 digs), and Papenfuss (5 digs) did work for the Burros. M-C is 1-0 in the SEC/overall. Lanesboro is 1-3, 1-3.
