LeRoy-Ostrander/Lyle/Pacelli won 7 of 8 fourth-down battles to turn away visiting Spring Grove, 28-7. Quarterback Reid Hungerholt accounted for all four Cardinal touchdowns while amassing 400 yards of total offense (23-222 yards rushing, 9.7 avg. 3 TDs) and 178 yards passing (11 of 16, TD, no interceptions). But the L-O/L/P defense was equally adept. While the Cardinal attack converted 3 of 3 fourth down plays, the Lion offense went only 1 for 5 on fourth-down. L-O/L/P also successfully defended all Lion long pass attempts. Dylan Halverson completed 7 of 14 passes, but most of the 86 yards were gained after short receptions. The lone Lion fourth-down conversion was a 22-yard Halverson short pass and Ezra Konkel reception run that set up Konkel’s 2-yard TD run. Konkel rushed 18 times for 159 yards (8.8 avg.). The tone was set early, starting with SG’s first and longest possession of 60 yards. After L-O/L/P staged a goal line stand, Hungerholt took the next snap and raced 97 yards to pay dirt – the longest run against Spring Grove in the 26 years for which single-game records remain. The Lions answered soon, recovering a fumble at the Cardinal 20 and then scoring in six plays to pull even at 7-7. But the Redbird reply was quick as well, a 77-yard drive capped by a deep 45-yard Hungerholt throw to Hunter Wollenburg to make it 14-7 at halftime. Wollenburg claimed receiving honors with 7 receptions for 123 yards. Banning Korfhage had 3 catches for 63 yards. L-O/L/P added a TD in both the third and fourth periods, both traversing 57 yards after recovering Lion fumbles and both scored by Hungerholt on 1 and 3-yard runs. Both teams lost two fumbles and punted once, but L-O/L/P prevailed on fourth downs and outdistanced SG by 131 yards, 408 to 277. L-O/L/P is 1-0 in the South-East and overall. SG is 0-1.
