Allen Schmidt obituary, Fillmore County Journal

Allen Schmidt passed away peacefully after a short time in the hospital at the age of 93, on June 11, 2026. He was a lifelong resident of Wykoff running a family farm his entire working life. He was preceeded in death by parents Iona (Affeldt) Schmidt and Louis Schmidt, his wife of 32 years, Donna (Neimeyer) Schmidt; and brothers Loren and Myron. Following is the obituary that Allen had written prior to his death:

Dear friends and relatives, I decided to write my own obituary.

I was born to Louis and Iona (Affeldt) Schmidt on July 2, 1932, on the home farm in Jordan Township.

I always told my younger brothers I was born working. I started country school at the old stone one room schoolhouse in 1938. I went there for seven years completing two grades in one year. In 1945 (eighth grader) I was the champion of Fillmore County Current Events winning a trip to the State Fair. THIS WAS THE ONLY YEAR THEY CANCELLED THE STATE FAIR!!

I spent summers cultivating corn lengthwise and crosswise. During the war, I picked milk weed pods for life jackets, collecting scrap iron and old tires to help win the war.

I painted for Bill Hamm and did some plumbing with Wojtkiewicz. After graduation, I picked sweet corn by hand for Reid Murdock. I went into the army in January 1953 for infantry training at Camp Roberts in California for six months. I then went to the atomic plants at Camp Hanford in Washington State as a radar operator for 1 ½ years.

I got out of the military in 1955 and married in April 1956 to my wonderful wife Donna Niemeyer and we had four children: Debbie Moeller (Ernie) of Rochester, Duane Schmidt of Wykoff, Karen Jackson (Pat) of Ontonagon, Michigan, and Renee Maile (Cory) of Marco Island, Florida.

I was on the church council, co-op creamery board, and the Wykoff  School Board. I was chairman for five years. I loved bowling and collected some classic cars, with my first being a 1926 Model T. My favorite car was the ‘53 Olds I brought home from the Army.

I was baptized, confirmed and married twice in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wykoff where I am being buried.

I have seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The grandchildren are Chad Kalstabakken (Jill) of Rosemount, Minnesota, Brady Schmidt (Jacque) of Wykoff, Mark Schmidt (Kami) of Wykoff, Ashley Stein (Brett) of Rochester, Nathan Jackson (Dayoung) of Seoul, South Korea, Aaron Jackson (Abby) of Golden Valley, Minnesota, and Morgan Maile of Marco Island, Florida.

The 14 great grandchildren are Connor Eickhoff, Amelia, Sophia, Hazel and Oliver Kalstabakken; Brinlee Schmidt, Atlas and Odin Jackson, Lena, Logan and Leon Jackson; and Sloane, Harris, and Grant Stein.

Donna died in February 1992. We were living in Fillmore at the time. Later I married Betty Brevig-Kampschroer from Spring Grove. We moved to Wykoff and I retired from farming a few years later. After retiring I enjoyed going to auctions and selling the items on eBay. I went to so many auctions in Spring Valley that my name was always known as NUMBER #9 at every sale.

I always remembered my age because I was 200 years younger than George Washington, which I never hesitated to tell anyone that would listen.

– This is the end of Allen’s self-written obituary. –

Allen always had a good sense of humor and loved to tell stories and talk politics. In his younger years he loved bowling, sports, and getting together with other couples to play cards. His humor, wit and breadth of knowledge will surely be missed. Allen loved his coffee buddies. He would bring an auction item just to see if he could outwit someone at the table.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wykoff, Minnesota. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the church on Monday, June 15, 2026, and will continue one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery.

Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Wykoff is assisting the family.
