Baseball: Trojans’ Offensive Outburst Aids 3-1 Week

Rushford-Peterson baseball started a four-game week with a loss to Cotter/Hope Lutheran by 9-1 tally. The Trojans had just two hits off a pair of Rambler pitchers. Cayden Lea (1-for-3) scored the only run, Grant DeGeorge (0-for-2) with the only RBI. Blake Lea’s Trojans at that point were 1-4 on the season having scored 12 runs in five games. Over their next three games, R-P scored 41 runs, out-scoring struggling teams Wabasha-Kellogg (0-6), Houston (1-6), and Chatfield (0-8) by 41-3 tally! The Trojans beat W-K 15-0 in five innings, smacking five extra base hits. Lea was the stand-out, hitting a home run (2-4, 2 RBI, R) while collecting the pitching win (4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K). Carson Johnson (3-4, two 2B, RBI), Jaxon Johnson (2-3, 5 RBI, 2 R), Owen Lange (2-3, 2B, RBI, 3 R), Ayden Garrett (2-3, 2 RBI, R), Elias Johnson (1-2, 2 RBI), and DeGeorge (1-4, 2B, R) contributed to the break-out game where the Trojans scored more runs than on the season coming in. Versus Houston, the biggest highlight of a 14-0 win in six innings was Carson Johnson (2-3, 3 RBI, 3 R). The junior hit home runs in back-to-back at bats (first and fourth innings). DeGeorge had three hits (3-4, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R) and collected the win (5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K). Levi Kammerer (2-4, two 2B, 3 RBI, R) and Lea (1-4, 2 RBI, R) helped. Houston had just four hits. The Trojans had a nine-run sixth against Hurricane relief pitchers. Houston fell to 1-2 in the SEC, 1-6 overall. R-P finished its week at Chatfield. The Trojans put eight on the board in the first inning and never looked back, albeit the Gophers stayed out of the mercy rule. R-P prevailed 12-3. Lange led the way with three hits (3-5, R). DeGeorge (2-4, 2B, R), Lea (1-5, 2B, 2 R), E-Johnson (2-4, R, 3 1/3 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K), and Tahven Pepin (1-4, R) each drove in two runs. Softball/Baseball: First GMLOK Win a Walk-Off Headlines Series with SG

After Spring Grove’s softball win at GMLOK, both teams left with identical records, 2-3 overall and 1-2 SEC. Across town in Spring Valley, both Spring Grove (0-4) and GMLOK (0-5) came in searching for a first win. On both diamonds, the team that scored first, lost. Bulldog Carter Strobel became the winning pitcher while scoring the winning run in a 7-6 GMLOK baseball victory with the walk-off, RBI single from freshman Tate Rasmussen (2-3, 2 R), the game’s only batter with multiple hits. The Lions scored the first run, but had to rally to pull even at 3-3 in the third inning. Down again, 6-3, Spring Grove rallied again with a three-run sixth inning, making it 6-6 heading into the final inning. The Lions did not score and left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh. Then Strobel led off with a walk and stole two bases before scoring on Rasmussen’s one-out game-winner. GMLOK scored seven runs on eight hits with no errors and left only three runners on base. The Lions stranded nine runners while scoring six runs on five hits with one error. Strobel (2 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 2 K) got the pitching win with two innings of relief work for Jayden Smith (5 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 4 K). For SG, freshman reliever Weston Bauer (2 2/3 IP, 3 BB, 4 K) took the loss despite allowing only one run and one hit. For GMLOK, Rasmussen and Dan Lund (1-2, 2 RBI, R) each doubled, the only extra-base hits of the game. With each going 1 for 3, other Bulldog hits came from Strobel (RBI, R), Noah Tangen (RBI), Jackson Soltau (2 R), Lennon Falck and Mason Janssen (R). SG singles came from Bauer (1-3, R), Ezra Konkel (1-3, RBI, R), Kolton Nerstad (1-2, R, 3 SBs), Gabe Klug (1-2, 2 R) and Tysen Moen (1-3). GMLOK prevailed despite losing the walks battle 10 to 5. The Bulldogs improved to 1-2 in the SEC, 1-5 overall, while SG left at 0-3, 0-5. In the Lions’ 8-2 softball win, winning pitcher, eighth grader Claire Sherburne, gave the Lions a 2-1 lead with a two-out solo home run over the centerfield fence in the third inning. In the next inning, a two-RBI single from Jada Strinmoen made it 4-1. SG doubled its run count with a four-run outburst in the seventh frame, which included three singles, four walks and the only two errors of the game. The Lions scored eight runs on eight hits from Sherburne (2-3, HR, RBI), Strinmoen (2-5, 3 RBI), Brailyn Gulbranson (2-3, RBI), pinch hitter Lynden Morken (1-1, RBI) and Izabel Kaufmann (1-4).
