McCabe’s 3,000th Assist Highlights Cougar VB’s Odd Week

November 9, 2020 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - High School Volleyball

It was a ho-hum week for Mabel-Canton volleyball.  They beat one their closest competitors in the East handily, then notched a second win over a division foe.  The biggest highlight came from senior setter/hitter Kenidi McCabe.  All said feats were performed oddly on Wednesday and then Saturday.  M-C (5-0) first trekked to Randolph on hump day.  The Rockets (4-1) came in tied for second in the East with Lanesboro (4-1).  Lonnie Morken’s group extended its division lead with an easy sweep, 25-12, 25-12, 25-10.  Molly Lee (13 kills) had a season-high spikes.  McCabe (11 kills, 13 digs, 13 assists, 17-17 serving, 5 aces), Jordyn Newgard (6 kills, 7 digs, 15-16 serving, 3 aces), and Sophie Morken (5 kills, 23 assists, 6 digs, 16-17 serving, 4 aces) did big work.  Emily Carolan (4 kills) and Saijal Slafter (3 kills) gave the Cougars six with three-plus kills.  Houston then came to town on Saturday.  McCabe sat seven assists from 3,000.  She hit a lot in the first set, but got the milestone in game two.  The 5’5” senior multi-time All-State pick entered the season already M-C’s all-time set assists leader.  She is now the only Cougar ever with over 3,000 helpers.  M-C downed Houston 3-0 (25-12, 25-27, 25-12).  McCabe (10 kills, 11 assists, 8 digs), Lee (6 kills), Newgard (6 kills, 6 digs, 3 aces), Morken (5 kills, 15 assists, 5 digs, 4 aces), Slafter (5 kills), and Carolan (5 kills) gave M-C six with five-plus spikes.  Lauren Wyffels added 4 aces on 16 of 17 serving.  M-C hit a season-best .479.  Houston was led by Emma Geiwitz (6 kills, 5 digs), Lilly Carr (8 assists), and Becca Rostad (6 digs).  East leading #4 in Class A M-C improved to 7-0.  Houston fell to 2-5.
