It was a ho-hum week for Mabel-Canton volleyball. They beat one their closest competitors in the East handily, then notched a second win over a division foe. The biggest highlight came from senior setter/hitter Kenidi McCabe. All said feats were performed oddly on Wednesday and then Saturday. M-C (5-0) first trekked to Randolph on hump day. The Rockets (4-1) came in tied for second in the East with Lanesboro (4-1). Lonnie Morken’s group extended its division lead with an easy sweep, 25-12, 25-12, 25-10. Molly Lee (13 kills) had a season-high spikes. McCabe (11 kills, 13 digs, 13 assists, 17-17 serving, 5 aces), Jordyn Newgard (6 kills, 7 digs, 15-16 serving, 3 aces), and Sophie Morken (5 kills, 23 assists, 6 digs, 16-17 serving, 4 aces) did big work. Emily Carolan (4 kills) and Saijal Slafter (3 kills) gave the Cougars six with three-plus kills. Houston then came to town on Saturday. McCabe sat seven assists from 3,000. She hit a lot in the first set, but got the milestone in game two. The 5’5” senior multi-time All-State pick entered the season already M-C’s all-time set assists leader. She is now the only Cougar ever with over 3,000 helpers. M-C downed Houston 3-0 (25-12, 25-27, 25-12). McCabe (10 kills, 11 assists, 8 digs), Lee (6 kills), Newgard (6 kills, 6 digs, 3 aces), Morken (5 kills, 15 assists, 5 digs, 4 aces), Slafter (5 kills), and Carolan (5 kills) gave M-C six with five-plus spikes. Lauren Wyffels added 4 aces on 16 of 17 serving. M-C hit a season-best .479. Houston was led by Emma Geiwitz (6 kills, 5 digs), Lilly Carr (8 assists), and Becca Rostad (6 digs). East leading #4 in Class A M-C improved to 7-0. Houston fell to 2-5.
