November 9, 2020 by Paul Trende

Lanesboro’s Jessie Schreiber tips at the net, defended by Spring Grove’s Brielle Neeley (while Lions #14 Julia Halverson and #15 Lydia Solum look on). The Burros moved to a 6-1 with a 3-0 sweep of the Lions.

Julie Schreiber’s Lanesboro volleyball team staked its claim to being the second best SEC squad by posting a 2-0 week.  The Burros first swept Houston 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-22).  Sydney Taylor (12 kills, 10 digs), Kaci Ruen (8 kills, 8 digs, 12-12 serving, 5 aces), Malia Tessum (26 digs), Ella Cambern (28 assists, 11 digs) led the way, getting help from Jessie Schreiber (8 kills) and Kendall Stettler (15-15 serving, 2 aces, 6 digs).  Emma Geiwitz (6 kills, 10 digs), Lilly Carr (16 assists), Sydney Torgerson (5 kills, 8 digs), and Richelle Botcher (5 kills) led the Hurricanes.  Lanesboro then improved to 6-1 (6-1 SEC) with straight-set wins over SG (26-24, 25-20, 25-20).  The total error count was even, but Lanesboro had four more kills and three fewer hitting errors. The Burros hit with 13% efficiency to only 7% for the Lions.  Both teams served 89%, but the Burros served six more aces (11 to 5).  All three sets were competitive, but the Burros won them all with late-set scoring streaks.  Set one had been tied nine times, but the Lions led 23-20 before Lanesboro finished with a 6-1 run (3 kills, 2 ace serves, 1 block). The Burros trailed in set two, 18-17, before winning with an 8-2 run (2 kills, 3 blocks). Down 17-13 in set three, Lanesboro raced away with a closing 12-3 run (6 kills, 2 aces).  Ruen paced the Burros with 14 kills, 7 digs, three blocks, and two ace serves. Taylor scored with 8 kills and four services aces (20-23 serving) while adding 14 digs.  Schreiber put away another 8 kills along with three ace serves and 10 digs.  Cambern directed the attack with 27 set assists and 11 digs.  Tessum had 22 digs.  For SG (4-3, 4-3 SEC), Kenadee Gerard had 8 kills and Rachel Normann aired up 25 assists.  Addyson McHugh (7 kills, 2 ½ blocks, 11-11 serving), Julia Halverson (6 kills, 10 digs), Maggie Lile (14 digs), and VaNessa Peterson (10 digs) helped.  The Burros (6-1) trail M-C (7-0) in the East.  Randolph (4-2) and SG (4-3) are in third and fourth places.  Five of Lanesboro’s six league wins have been sweeps.
