It will be a unique fall sports season. With the Minnesota State High School league coming to the decision to move near-contact sports football and volleyball to the spring (due to COVID-19), cross country and soccer will be the only fall sports (pertaining to local schools) left to go on. It makes what would’ve been a very busy fall sports season, a skeleton of its former self. Cross country is also changed. Teams will have one less meet. A maximum of three schools will be at each meet, a maximum of 25 runners allowed to compete at a time. Meets will be conducted in waves when 25 or more competitors are present. The structure for large events, like the Three Rivers Meet and the Section 1A Meet, which typically have double-digit teams competing, is still to be determined. The postponing of football and volleyball has led to a few previously heralded sports names to try their legs at cross country. Moreover, a sporting expansion in the Fillmore County Journal, one that will add coverage of Spring Grove, Grand Meadow, and LeRoy-Ostrander, will be ushered in more quietly with football and volleyball on hold. The Journal will cover the sports programs of 10 schools moving forward, the three above with contemporaries Fillmore Central, Lanesboro, Chatfield, Kingsland, Rushford-Peterson, Mabel-Canton, and Houston. To offset the void of no football and volleyball, and on the wings of the popular individual All-Decade teams presented last spring, a Fall Top 50 countdown will happen. The Journal Sports will count down the top 50 fall teams relating to the above 10 schools from 2010-2019. More information on that will come in future weeks. Also, former Spring Grove Herald Sports Director Lee Epps will also supply a column relating to his many years of sports travels plus help with Spring Grove related sports.
