Gophers Make First Section Title Since 2013

November 5, 2018 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - COVID-19 issues dominate Chatfield School Board meetingChatfield Gophers

There for a span, it was a white-hot rivalry.  Chatfield’s culmination was a memorable 1AA title game win in the 2013 state title season.  The Gophers and Caledonia are set to meet again for the 1AA title.  Chatfield (2-seed, 6-2) had no trouble with Cotter (7-seed, 0-8) in the quarters.  A 28-point first quarter gave way to a 44-6 win.  Sophomore Ben Roline (12-173, 3 TDs) had great mop-up stats.  Gage Tuohy (3-47, TD rushing), Carson Larrabee (2-54, TD rushing), Chance Backer (2-58, TD receiving), and Reid Johnson (3-6, 79 yards, TD passing) all scored in the first.  Cotter had six turnovers.  Chatfield (2-seed, 7-2) then hosted upstart Triton (6-seed, 2-7).  Big receptions were huge.  Larrabee caught an 80-yard wheel-route TD in the second quarter, Tuohy an 82-yard screen pass TD (both from Reid Johnson) in the third.  The scores gave Chatfield 13-7 and 21-7 leads.  Triton scored early in the fourth (28-14), but Tuohy cemented things with two ensuing TD runs for a 42-14 win.  The senior (19-144, 2 TDs rushing, 82-yard TD reception) had a huge game.  Larrabee (13-64, TD rushing, 80-yard TD reception, forced fumble, sack) also scored two ways.  Johnson scored three ways (6-10, season-high 243 yards, 2 TD passing, rushing TD, two-point reception from Tuohy).  Chatfield won turnovers 5-0 (11:0 ratio in the play-offs).  Seth Allen sniped his eighth pass and had a fumble recovery.  Triton was led by sophomore QB Mason Barker (12-24, 144 yards, TD, 2 INTs; 13-47 rushing), Anthony Avery (16-84 rushing), Austin Melder (8-39, TD rushing), and Drew Kelly (4-62, TD receiving).  It will be #8 Chatfield (2-seed, 8-2) versus #1 Caledonia (1-seed, 10-0) for the 1AA title.
