Noted at the July 14 meeting, the city of Whalan is looking forward to hosting Whalan Good Old Days, which will be taking place in August. The day will include a picnic at noon and fellowship with friends old and new.
Present at the regularly scheduled city council meeting was Mayor David Hallum, along with council members Owen Lewis, Thore E. Johnson, Sheila Higbe and Kim Berekvam. City Clerk/Treasurer Teresa Grossell was also present.
The council approved the Agenda with two additions under New Business. These additions included Whalan Good Old Days picnic and Accepting a Contribution. The council approved the Minutes from the June 9, 2025, regularly scheduled council meeting and the Treasurer’s Report as presented by Grossell.
Continued Business
Grossell reported to the council that she is still working on Liquor License and Related Ordinance Updates. She will give the council an update on the progress at the August city council meeting.
The council continues to work on the list of items from the city council walking tour.
City maintenance worker Randy Berekvam discussed the truck repair on the city truck. Having the frame sandblasted will cost approximately $600. Berekvam will get a final quote on the work to be done. The city council approved the sandblasting being done at a cost of up to $700.
New Business
The council approved the 2025 DNR Maintenance Agreement and also approved the Worker’s Comp Renewal.
The Whalan Good Old Days picnic will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the meal at noon at the town hall.
The council approved accepting a donation in the amount of $1,000 from the Lanesboro American Legion Post #40 toward the softball fund.
Miscellaneous
Grossell presented the city council and visitors with a recap on the 2025 Whalan Fastpitch Tournament. This year was the 50th Anniversary of the tournament. There were 18-20 teams that participated, traveling to Whalan from all around the country and also a team from Canada. Grossell stated that the tournament was a great time for those attending and there was a good crowd in attendance throughout the tournament.
The spongy moth application has been completed. The application took place on July 1.
The $5,000 grant that the city received from SEMAC for the Music in the Bluffs series will be expended soon. There may be additional funds available from other sources, such as donations. The June concert was well attended, with beautiful weather and great music.
In Maintenance updates, Berekvam reported that 135 gallons of fuel were added to the fuel tank. Potholes will be filled soon. There are some tree stumps in town that need to be removed. The council plans to have these removed in autumn. Also, the council would like to purchase some replacement trees this fall using money available in the Beautification Fund.
In City Park/Ballfield Updates, the city council recognized Frank Electric for donating $250 toward the ballfield, which was taken off the bill.
