Section 1AA girls’ basketball is going to be a dogfight. As of January 10, nine teams had at least eight wins. Scott Sorenson’s Caledonia Warriors joined that group by authoring a week where they beat two eight-win 1AA foes. All told, they went 3-0 to move their win streak to four. The Warriors first dropped TRC West leading Dover-Eyota (5-1, 10-3) by a 61-53 final. Alexis Schroeder led the way with 18 points. Paige Klug (11 pts) and Sadie Treptow (10 pts) also hit double figures. Isabelle Schultz had seven points off the bench. Caledonia jumped out to a 33-20 halftime lead. D-E didn’t help itself at the free throw line, going 4 of 15. Malia Nelson had 21 to lead all scorers. It was the Eagles first TRC loss. D-E replied by beating Cotter 73-65 their next game. A few days later, the Warriors nipped #6 in AA Lake City (4-2, 9-3) in Byron 47-46. Schroeder (14 pts) and Paige Klug (12 pts) hit double figures. Jovial King chipped in eight points. The Tigers were led by Natalie Bremer (17 pts) and Mya Shones (15 pts). The game was part of the 16-game boy and girls Rochester Hoops Challenge, featuring multiple high-quality squads from, and outside, the area. Sandwiched between those games, the Warriors posted an easy win over St. Charles, 55-18. Eleven Cal gals scored, led by Treptow (11 pts), King (10 pts), and Ava Privet (8 pts). The Saints were held to five second half points. With the wins, the Warriors improved to 8-5 overall. The victories were Caledonia’s first versus 1AA foes, and thus needed. They started 0-4 versus their section. Fifth-ranked Goodhue (11-1), #6 Lake City (9-3), Cotter (10-3), Lourdes (9-4), D-E (10-3), PEM (8-2), Chatfield (10-4), and La Crescent/Hokah (8-5) all also have at least eight wins amongst 1AA teams. Cal (4-2, 8-5) and LC/H (4-2, 8-5) trail Cotter (5-1, 10-3) in the TRC-East. The Warriors were credited with one more TRC loss in last week’s paper, but a defeat versus Chatfield was non-conference. The teams play their TRC game later this season.
